The end?

Putin won’t be going anywhere and if he does you will get Putin 2.0.

No winners in this war.

Regardless of nationality, just tens of thousands of ordinary soldiers dead or maimed and tens of millions of ordinary people turned into refugees and all that goes with it.

Whilst the politicians argue about who is in and out of NATO and the revered EU from behind the barricades, our hard earned taxes go to buy even more destructive weapons and the Ukraine infrastructure is smashed to the point it will take 20 years to recover.

Slav v Slav.

Madness.

Lets hope it doesn’t go nuclear because I think London would be first on the list.
Spot on.
London followed by Catterick!

Clutching at straws my friend. There'd been big rumours about his health but the Yanks have confirmed there's nowt wrong with him, and they's know
I wasn’t talking about his health. Referring specifically to his demeanour in that overly lengthy address of yesterday.

no, no it isn't.

Ukraine is a sovereign country and has the right of self determination, no one held a gun to the head of Ukrainian leaders tell them they must join NATO, someone has held that gun to Ukraine telling them they can't. Grow the f.. up man.

Ukraine didn’t want to join nato before Russia F***ing annexed crimea .

This is all to do with the fact Russia didn’t like their puppet was ousted. But the Russian puppet promised closer ties to the eu . He was removed because he renegaded on his promise due to corruption and made Ukraine sign an economic pact with russia

Thanks, it wasn't really a point to be honest. I just don't understand the reason why people think London would be no 1 target.

If Russia was firing nukes at NATO nations, multiple would be getting targetted at once.

But for some strange reason Russia has recently really leant in to the narrative that the UK is the main orchestrator of a lot of the resistance to Russia around the world.

Might just be because they realise they can no longer compete with the USA as a peer and it's easier for their psyche to blame a nation that's closer to their level.

Said it before, back a bear into a corner and he'll turn on you.

If it's a choice of going nuclear and saving his own skin or getting an icepic in his ear I have no doubt what Putin will do.

And to suggest his nuclear capability has gone away due to poor maintenance..... FFS.

He wouldn't drop a nuke on the States, he'd send them our way and the Amercans would do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
They wouldn’t have to. It’s why we have an independent nuclear deterrent, and why I was wrong knocking on doors for CND in my youth.

You weren’t wrong, nuclear missiles are simply a sign that the human race is struggling to cope with life and is risking self destruction.

Much better if politicians worked together for the benefit of the people rather than their own warped agendas.

Hmm, tricky one. The fundamental nature of Homo sapiens: aggressive, competitive, militates against unilateral disarmament. If there were no prospect of nuclear retaliation, do you believe Putin would still be using conventional weapons against Ukraine?

Fundamental nature of politicians- aggressive, competitive etc, with individualism and celebrity status encouraged by the media, all about win - lose.
Fundamental nature of normal life as experienced by the general population is largely team based, collaborative and win - win.
But I agree that the harsh reality of the world we live in means we need a nuclear deterrent but that doesn’t mean they are acceptable or that we shouldn’t be striving to get rid of them.

No chance. They're all brainwashed with little access to the truth.
Where are all the high profile defections now?
Anyone taking over and pulling out of Ukraine will be seen as a traitor to the motherland and will be strung up anyway.

I agree that a revolt is not imminent but most young people watch little TV and have smartphones and the ability to use a vpn, so are still able to access banned sites if they choose, Facebook and Instagram are still full of Russians. Older generation, fair enough, they watch the TV propaganda in larger numbers.
If Putin was deposed then any replacement would need serious backing as there could be a power vacuum. Pulling out of Ukraine would not anger the wider population (quite the opposite) into cries of treason, it’s not a widely popular war that people have bought into… but it could lead to hardliners making a move, but how many would maintain their stance if Putin was gone? - it’s thought many of the hawks (such as formerly quite moderate Medvedev) are only spouting pro-war rhetoric to keep in with Putin anyway.
Either way, there’s some nasty elements that would need a close eye, but the wider Russian population, whether they believe propaganda or not, would be far happier if things returned to some kind of normal.

Putin uses the rat analogy himself… https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/07/08/vladimir-putin-backs-down-russia-ukraine/

I don’t think Putin has a death wish and I don’t think it’s as simple as him pressing a big red launch button. I could still see him using a smaller battlefield warhead against Ukraine, or escalate elsewhere in the unlikely event Russia became directly under heavy attack.

And to suggest his nuclear capability has gone away due to poor maintenance..... FFS.

Diminished maybe, not gone away. Regardless, even 1/4 fully functional is still more than enough.

He wouldn't drop a nuke on the States, he'd send them our way and the Amercans would do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Disagree, attacking a NATO member, in this case the UK, would see a response from us (the alpha-male military cosplayers on Russian TV like to beat their chests about bombing us*, but we still have enough warheads to destroy Russia and the people who need to know that do know that) and the alliance, including the US. The US can’t show significant weakness because China is watching very closely…

*this isn’t a new thing. Russia is a country that, similar to Iran, has prominent figures that believe a conspiracy theory that the UK is the brains behind the nefarious going’s on in the world, the US is just our muscle… if only our political class had half the competence to accomplish anything on that scale!

On one hand they love to call us a small and insignificant island, whilst also claiming we’re behind almost any plot and action that negatively impacts on Russia, it’s been pretty funny seeing this written about us over the years. We, of course, use this to our advantage, such as in NATO when the RN sailed through the waters close to Crimea that sent a message in a way a French vessel wouldn’t.

The average Russian seems to quite like the UK, our soft power of James Bond and Keep Calm goes a long way, Union Jacks are common and everyone wants to learn English and visit London, it’s a shame as Russians should not be our enemy, but Putin wants his sphere of influence that certainly doesn’t want him.

Our man in Sweden is quiet today.

Yes, been out in the wilderness and had friends over yesterday. Also my mate has been in business meetings for two days solid, so I haven't heard much from him apart from news on investors.

I may get more today. Just watched Konstantine's latest video about the mobilisation. Obviously, there is a lot that he can't say, but you get a picture of how this will change (and has already changed) the public perception of the conflict.

Might get more later today. I am hopeful that this is Putin ramping up the threat as a bargaining tool for negotiations. Trying to coerce Ukraine and the western military suppliers into accepting terms that are more favourable to Russia.

He was a popular president in Russia ... this may well change significantly.

Bear in mind that his closest allies, Xi, Modi and Erdogan have all told him that it needs to stop.

Sounds like it's mostly the poor and ethnic minorities from far flung towns and villages that are getting press ganged in to service now.

I expect they're doing their best to avoid upsetting the more influential big cities.

Sounds like chaos in Russia with people either protesting or leaving

I did spot a report yesterday of another former Putin ally who has fallen down some stairs to his death ☹️

Also the Guardian thinks the total reservists could reach 1 million 🤷🏻‍♂️
The only thing that may come of this is it helps nudge Putin out the door
