The end?

This may of already of been mentioned, but I thought I would share just incase anybody hadn't heard/seen/read about it. But The Government are testing the emergency alarm system on our mobile phones in April. I think with the current tension in the world this has obviously been pushed forward and would be our 4 minute warning incase of worst case scenario nuclear. It is supposed to be useable for other things such as storms and severe weather. But I think the main reason is obviously nuclear threat and this is the ideal thread to share it.

I think this would be far more likely to be used in the now, not uncommon scenario of an adverse weather event than a nuclear apocalypse.

So, Xi doesn’t seem too bothered about the war crimes. He’s warmly shaken his friend’s hand having dismissed the actions of the ICC, which China doesn’t even officially recognise.

Does anyone think we will see progress in Ukraine from this visit?

We may see Russia declare a cease fire, whilst remaining in the occupied territories. This would obviously be disadvantageous to Ukraine who would resist Russia and China’s calls for a ceasefire.

I think the visit will see both parties solidify their strategic relationship in the face of AUKUS, develop trade deals which continue to be very beneficial to China and discuss measures to evade sanctions which continue to allow China to support Russia in any way they think they can get away with.

My personal feeling, not being in any way an expert, is that Xi sees a role for China as peacemaker, which ultimately enables their long term plans for an inevitable new world order.
He does have an alliance with Putin, and I’m sure he will try to keep Putin away from The Hague in any settlement with Ukraine, but Russia will be forced to exit all Ukrainian territories.
Xi would wish to avoid a seismic change to the power base in Moscow (western leaning), but ultimately the Russians will probably turn on Putin and force change, although we cannot really predict who would take the reins.
Xi knows China needs Europe and US to trade its way to the top, and needs Russia to provide a buffer to the west.
Next week or so could be critical. If they don’t broker some kind of deal now, I get the feeling Ukraine will unleash hell.

“but Russia will be forced to exit all Ukrainian territories”

Who do you think will force them to do this?
I think this will be part of the peace deal. Ukraine will not accept any less. I think the only "compromise" would be for Putin to gain some kind of protection from prosecution.
Whichever way, I just pray we see an end to this atrocious conflict

I’d love to see it but I think we are quite some time away from that sort of settlement.

The best analogy for where we are right now is most likely with the end of WW1, both on the eastern front and the collapse of Russia and even more so probably on the Western front with the imminent collapse of Germany and the Treaty of Versailles, which it wouldn't have agreed to if it hadn't been in such a dire state due to the blockade (sanctions) taking more and more toll while the western powers were just getting stronger. The losses in men and the effect on the German home population economically too had all got too much.

Russia cannot win this war, it is just the degree as to how it loses. It's only real bargaining chip is that for as long as the war continues Ukraine and the world economy also loses. It's close to existential for Russia.

Germany was in a similar situation from mid 1942 really.

I’ve no idea where this will end

What are the Russian casualties per day? Over 800 a day? Is that sustainable and presumably the war will intensify as spring approaches

And no idea if it’s relevant but TikTok being banned looks like America is possibly going to shift away from China

I imagine America is very interested in Xi’s visit
Very interested but not very optimistic, I suspect.

America is shifting away from China and China is moving ever closer to Russia.

Not healthy directions of travel…..

Are China moving 'ever closer' to Russia?

They are having a meeting. They haven't backed Russia in this war, so far. So far there is nothing to contradict what our Swedish friend has said, is there?

Read the reports from the meeting.

It’s not exactly “Sod off Balldrick” is it?

China has supported Russia from the beginning.

Well, no they haven't. They have remained neutral whilst observing the sanctions to the largest extent (China needs import/exports and shipping).

There is open reporting of both Xi and Putin’s statements following the meeting.

Yes, you can say they discussed something different and agreed to put out differing statements but I just don’t buy that.
