I've liked our defenders for a few years.

However, when successive managers fail to get them performing as a unit, you start wondering if the players were really the problem.

Both JW signings, which is a little surprising in the circumstances.

Neither player has proven consistently they deserve to be in the squad nevermind the starting 11.

The manager will select a squad based on what he thinks we need for certain games, if not injured I would expect Dijksteel to be at least on the bench on saturday due to Norwich's pace in wide areas.

The manager is picking a team he trusts and it everyone elses job to earn the right to play and when they get the opportunity, prove there worth, if the player doesnt take it then so be it, I trust the managers decision.

They are decent squad players - not sure what happened tonight, nearly all teams nowadays have 2 defenders on the bench, only McNair on ther bench.

let's face it when Leo brought Smith in you could immediately tell that that was a huge statement. Djksteel has been very poor but Bola for me is worst than Giles, as he rarely has a good pass or a cross.

I don't see how its sad to see a good player like dijksteel miss out. It means were playing well. I love dijksteel but Smith was brilliant tonight, a really good pro in terms of when to play and not. Excellent tackler.

Not fussed on mcnair or bola both really poor for me and would ship them out.

Got whatever reason they are not in the squad, if Carrick wants any players moving in then I’m guessing he will get his way.

Let’s not make a snap judgement and write off three top professionals who have brought done great memories.

Problem with dijksteel is that he is more of an athlete than footballer. Smith is a footballer and picked ahead of him. Dijksteel needs to up his game and concentration levels to get back in the team

Dijksteel is a good player who needs to be properly coached. His position is right back and should play there if we play a flat 4 imo.
Bola would allow Giles to play further forward.

Cannot complain about results at the moment but I hope they are both encouraged to stay and fight for their places.

Interesting that both were signed and discarded by JW. The theory he would be quite negative towards them in discussions with MC wouldnt be too hard to believe as he may have thought they contributed to his downfall. They are older and better players now

Methinks Carrick has a real fondness for the playing staff…

It’s wonderful that we now have competition for playing spots.
It’s nice to see academy and “development players” getting a chance.
It’s become a privilege to even make the bench.
Over the course of the season, he’ll give everyone a chance to contribute provided they earn it.
