Heartbreaking finish that
Ferrand Prevot is a breath of fresh air
Her attack was to set up Vos, so i think she was happy overall. You can see Vos almost slowing down in the hope she'd get over the line first, but she didn't dare ease off too much with Le Court on her wheel.

Question about helmets

It’s just over 22 years since they became compulsory in the TDF (after Kivilev’s tragedy at Paris Nice)

Just wondering what was going on prior to that?
I kind of imagine there can’t have been many ‘head injuries’ otherwise they wouldn’t have waited so long.

It seems the evidence today isn’t compelling either way with Chris Boardman, in particular, being an advocate of personal choice.

I think you have to separate the sport of cycling from an old dear, or maybe an old bloke like me pottering down to the shops. The whole debate which has raged for several decades is a distraction from the real dangers of cycling in heavily-trafficked cities. I would never try to dissuade anyone from wearing a helmet and I would hope they would have the courtesy to let me make my own choice. BTW. Boardman has always had his head screwed on in his cycling advocacy roles. We need more like him.

Surprisingly there wasn't that many deaths through head injuries, until Andrey Kivilev in Paris Nice, after which wearing helmets became mandatory (but you could still take them off on the last climb given they were heavy polystyrene things). There were plenty of protests against making them mandatory by some big names like Fignon and LeMond with the UCI being their usual weak toothless selves who pussy footed around it for a few years.

Interestingly they've been compulsory in Belgium for many years, and so when the tour veered into Belgium the riders would have to don them, before getting rid when they crossed back into France.

When I started cycling in the late 80's I'd wear a leather hairnet style helmet, as it wasn't really until the arrival of mountain bikes in the early 90's that the solid helmets really started to take off and the technology improved quickly.

I wear a helmet when I'm doing it as a sport, always, however when I'm riding into town to go to the pub on my singlespeed or even Limebiking in London (which is how I often get around) I dont wear a helmet which some may say is stupid (my wife often does) but I rode for 20 odd years rarely wearing one, and so I like to be able to make that choice.

And now, if you fancy it, you can get something like this
Solving a problem that I thought didn’t exist

Nasty crash for the peloton with 3ks to go in Angers. Vollering down hard and looked shook up but managed to remount and finish. Hope she is ok as this tour can ill afford to lose a third favourite after Reusser and Longo Borghini leaving.
