The Costa del Sol economy left 85 per cent paralysed by the new restrictions on all non-essential activity

The impact on the economy

The Costa del Sol is of course almost totally reliant on tourism - today would have been the official start of the "season". Some technology based businesses here, but fairly small

Ta for that. A sad read. Due to the dependence on tourism in your area. I hope things improve for you soon.

I guess it is for the long term good of us all though.

My experience is a little different. As the main focus of our business here is plasticulture (growing fruit, veg and other plants in plastic greenhouses). So this part of our industrial base here is still working really hard. To keep everyone fed.

We live in a small town that is a bit of an oasis in the sea of plastic. In my eyes it is a beautiful, open, spacious modern town with a marina and golf course (others dislike it as there is no real history - it started being built in the 70s.).

So tourism is our second industry here. That is being hurt a bit. However overall the plasticulture is keeping us going.

I compare where I live with the Boro. We used to have to drive through the chemical factories to get to a beautiful coastline. Where we live people have to drive through oceans of plastic. Then there is this fantastic view as you drive down the hill into town. It still makes me smile every time I drive down to home. Sadly I am not allowed to drive up the hill at the moment due to the lock down.

Where do you live, spanishman? I'm sure you've said before but I can't find it.

Some years ago we holidayed in Almeria with our 2 (then) toddlers at the Minarete apartments, hired a car and went to Granada, Nerja, Mojacar, Tabernas, Guadix, Cabo de Gata - went along there one evening and watched the flamingoes wheeling round with the sun glinting off their wings. And drove the car onto the beach, deserted in both directions. And got the car stuck in the sand.

We live in Almerimar at the other end of the province. About 2 hours east of Málaga on the motorway.

Ta for asking. We have taken a lot of people on day trips to a lot of the places you mention. We have also run bodega trips to some of those places as well. For members of our golf society and short mat bowls club. How I would love to do that again soon.

Nerja - lovely place. We had been holidaying there on and off for about 20 years before we moved here - a lot larger (Capistrano just keeps expanding and expanding up the hill) and busier than when we first went, but still got that charm in the old town.

We often drive up for a beer or meal (cracking Indian Restaurant there) ........ in normal times - that'll be on our list of things to do when the lockdown is lifted

Maybe we should look to meet up for a drink somewhere half way between the two of us? When all this madness is over? It would probably be only an hour drive for each of us.

What an absolutely splendid idea that is (y) .... something to look forward to and I think, from a previous post of yours, we're probably "of an age"

I would however, suggest a correction - "It would probably be only an hour drive for each of us" should read "It would probably be only an hours drive back for our wives" (y)

Alternatively (or as well as), if by some miracle the season isn't written off, my CF Malaga still have to play your UD Almeria at your place. If it is written off, we have two matches "next season" to look forward to

Think we should make it a FMTTM facetime
then we'll all be invited, certain posters can turn off the light & close the curtains to hide their identities 😏👍

I hope they aren't reading. :D I lived and worked on the Costa myself for a year or two (in San Pedro) and I can't imagine what this will do to the economy there. Of course there's still the filthy Russian money about the place but all thos ex-pat small businesses will really suffer.

The Russians are down in chavvy Marbella borolad - much more refined here (y)

Our sheikh is better than your sheikh. At least at the moment.

I love Nerja, too. I’m actually getting a little upset thinking of the good memories I have from there. My ex wife’s aunty (who has now sadly passed), had a villa there. We holidayed there about 6 years running with her and a few other family members, at different times. Haven’t been for about 12 years, amazing how time flies.

Our sheikh started off OK but he and his family have now been accused of stripping the club of cash to the tune of 1.5m euros per month - this season has been a farce. I posted the full details on (I think) "our" Spanish thread but basically it appears he's been using the club for money laundering (guess I ought to put "allegedly" here) and the courts have now taken over the club - hes trying to fight it but getting nowhere

Yep. I saw that. This was my response to your apple technology dig.
