The Coronavirus Act

Being voted on today by MP’s to extend for further 6 months. This will give Johnson and his cronies more powers to do what they want at the drop of a hat.

This act has had nearly every attempted prosecution dropped because the laws are so flimsy.

Let’s hope it doesn’t go through, but I’m pretty sure it will. Not that the mainstream media will mention it.

Does this mean that the government can now close certain industries or curtail openings? Issue a work from home request but there is no furlough. Could be a very grim winter

Yup all those things and also hand out contracts without due tender process.

From what I could see the majority of No's were on the Tory benches. And there weren't many of those. Cleared beforehand with Labour I would imagine.

Told you so.

But no, I amongst many others were called all sorts. After these 6 months have passed another 6 months will get put through parliament.

Exactly Randy. Many on this board seem surprised when some Labour voters point out just how useless the Starmer opposition is. Tonight is a perfect case study......

Most of their MPs couldn't even be bothered to turn up and debate the act. They will doubtless be very vocal, in some cases correctly, about the impact the governments pandemic response has had on society, particularly those on low incomes / most vulnerable. Sadly, they had a chance tonight to vote down the extension and suggest alternatives more fitting of a country which has great vaccine uptake and vast antibody coverage. Seemingly, they simply couldn't be arsed.

Whatever your political persuasion I think people should be very very worried about tonights events. Labour have handed the government the option of closing businesses at the drop of a hat in the name of public health without furlough/support (as LeeMiller pointed out). At the same time there are Labour MPs (Ben Bradshaw, looking at you) who are screaming for further restrictions now.

Should the government impose restrictions/closures (it shouldn't) without support then Labour are in no position to moan.

You'll never see the single mum or dad who lives in a flat with no garden and runs a cafe calling for lockdowns.
Wonder why that is?

You live in California? One of my friends says half the population wants to leave! That may be localised of course.

same here in California— lunatic asylum for those who just follow whatever the ruling class says
Yes, ignore the places that had restrictions in place and still saw rise cases. Amazing how it happens. Perhaps we don't fully understand transmission.

Yes. Live in a tower block? Despite vaccinations there are 'high profile' (looking at you iSAGE) academics who effectively say (want 'plan B'): Stay the f**k at home.

We’ll never fully know why or how this mess really happened, all we do know is that the governments around the world have used it to smash resistance to their policies and corruption. You will tow the line or else.

I don't think objecting to emergency powers would help. They are, usually a good thing and should be in place all other things being equal.

However they have been used by the tories to systematically steal from the taxpayers.

When lockdowns have come we could have had weeks of parliamentary debate and still locked down quicker than we did

However objecting to them would have been political suicide.
