Don't move the goal posts. You said by any measure we don't have a squad to compete. I've given you two very solid yard sticks where we not only compete but surpass them. I have no doubt that they're more solid in other areas but that was my point. We have a squad that can compete with anyone in this league. We've beaten Sheff United and top of the table West Brom, whilst we've also beaten Leeds' second string with our own second string away from home. Yet more evidence of the quality of our squad.
I don't understand the reluctance to acknowledge this? Not particularly directed are you alone Mart but there's seems to be a reluctance to question Carrick's performance and a desire to criticise our squad instead. I've no doubt that our problems lie with both but Carrick has underperformed in my opinion.
There’s also now a sentiment that the players aren’t good enough to execute the system - I read last night that ‘the structure gets us the xG, the players get us the results’. Parking the fact that absolutely nobody turns up or tunes in to see a structure ‘win’ xG, the truth is that the vast majority of this absolutely massive first-team squad has been signed to play this particular style and system.
Even the lads who came just before Carrick - Clarke was the ‘ball-playing left-sided defender we are desperate for’ for example - were all signed to play a certain way, under a certain coach who had specific principles and patterns of play. This is where some of the tension with Wilder stemmed from.
To see that brushed off and told instead the players can’t play the system well enough… that just doesn’t wash for me. And if they aren’t good then the head coach must find a way to work around it. Constantly being pick-pocketed on the edge of your own defensive third and constantly being unable to break down deep-lying opponents have been a theme since the start of last season.
There’s no sign of either of those things changing but we don’t really know if the ever could change or improve because the head coach won’t even countenance even a subtle switch of shape or type of pass this season. It’s more irritating when you consider he changed shape for a few matches last season. It can and has worked.
I just think… reading this stuff about the squad. How can we be three years into Scott doing the recruitment - and he has been recruiting to play this way all along, hence the tension with previous managers - and not have the players to do what Carrick wants? There is a disconnect somewhere along the line.
How can we have a squad that can’t do what Carrick wants it to do after all this time? Two full years for Carrick, three for Scott. We’ve signed 28 players since January 2022 and another 14 on loan. 42 players! And yet… they still need another 3, 4, 5 windows. Well it could be more I suppose. It tends to change.
There are too many excuses being made imo.
