The Budget

Pound now down to $1.092 vs US$.
That’s a more than 3% fall today.
And still dropping. It could go below the $

All the little working class tory supporters are quiet on this. But come next year, when the budget has given back to the low-paid a small portion of what they've just taken, you'll bet they'll be out trumpeting how they're 'our' natural government, just in time for the next election.
All they will need to do Harry is show some footage of a dinghy and it will have all the racists piling up at the ballot box, the country is in a mess and we are going deeper down the rabbit hole.

Yes, if this strategy doesn't work for ordinary people then the Tories will play the race card again, blaming it on brown people who are even worse off than they are themselves. No that it will matter. The Tories will be long gone, dragging the swag behind them.

Yeah, scorched earth is a good description.

I mean I love the idea of lower taxes and loads more funding into public services.

I don’t get how you can drop £90bn into the energy relief costs, £100bn+ into COVID, then drop another £46bn into lowering taxes, and still be able to afford to invest in anything that looks like public services.

Hell of a gamble on growth fuelled by low taxes when its proven that trickle-down economics rarely works, and hell of an irresponsible way to leave the country for the next government when you don’t even have a mandate / manifesto for these kind of policies.

Man, the media love to obsess over Labour economic policies being costed to the last pound and call them unrealistic. I don’t see anything like the same level of account being held to this.

Its a political budget and they are doing a number on us.
As expected we are getting grumpy to angry about higher rate of tax.

The next general election will be fought by Labour/Lib Dems on putting taxes up. The media will tell us all how much worse off we will be under a non Tory government,
On top of that - they will be pushing to tax high earners - increasing by 10% points - again not a winner. And, there are many higher earners who would happily have gone to 50% from 45%. 50% from 40%, once you are used it it is a different proposition.
To cool house prices, they will have to put stamp duty back on

You can see it now ‘Labour is the party of high taxation’

Remember - most of the great British public twitter a lot but have shown time and again they are just a bunch o selfish bar stewards who will trust the tories.

For me what we are actually witnessing frankly is a huge criminal enterprise in action.

Kwarteng used to work for Odey who made millions on Brext when the pound slumped.

Spot on TP!

I am wondering if by removing the 45% tax band, it creates a situation that it disincentives an individual looking to find tax avoidance schemes and therefore paying income tax.
If this is true it may scare a few accountants and lead eventually to a simplified tax scheme, which would surely be a good thing.

People who avoid tax aren’t going to want to pay 40%

I got an email from Shell saying they will deduct £66 a month from my DD starting from Oct 1st, so I’m putting my DD up by £66 and will stay pay what I’m paying now and see where that leaves me come 1st March.
As far as I’m aware you only get a refund if your bill is going to be over £2500k.
If you live alone or are just a couple you don’t gain.
My wife and I won’t gain and we have an old house with 4 bedrooms which needs a fair bit of heating.

In practice this means, again - I think, once you have paid £2500 the energy company won’t take any more off you.
