The british economy

UK economy to fare worse than any other country in developed world this year, IMF forecasts

The International Monetary Fund says the country's growth is being held back by more miserly government spending and the effects of high energy prices - and that the economy will even lag behind Russia's in 2023.

If we ever get relegated bottom of the league, Nobby will be like "yeah but look at second and third bottom!!"

He exists just to try and wind us up. I think he‘s actually a massive left leaning Corbynite (good for him) and he gets his kicks out of playing the opposite.
When I realised that, I started not to take anything he says seriously. Literally nothing.

AS apposed you your ballot selection. Nice one! What' the diffteence? Because I am struggling to see it.
Wahey! Good work laughster. Not heard that ridiculous line before 🤣 love the way it makes no sense in response to my post but hey, you got the usual dig in. That's a twofer in this thread . Keep banging that drum

It's not 'ridiculous' though is it SmallTory...?

You voted for the Conservative party whose election campaign slogan was 'Get Brexit Done' !

What is ridiculous, is your perpetual insecurity and desperation to now 'prove' yourself as a Tory hater. Perhaps you could sell the Socialist Worker outside the Happy Shopper in Park End and let the kids throw stuff at you ? That would do it 🥳

Thanks 👍

Every forecast is wrong the minute its published
I hope this one is. But brexit is such a failure I doub it.

I hope the brexiteers at some point realise the damage they have done. It's almost tragic hearing their delusion now.

Don't know if any of you tweet but the Tories have been going HARD to rubbish this story. Also, terribly, the BBC published an article saying why we can't trust the IMF. They are like Pravda now

That is how desperate they are getting isn't it? It's almost funny how hard they try to look for a benefit. I know Nobby is on a wind up but it's a great example. "Germany's economy is only doing a bit better than ours" is a giggle when you think about it.

Only in a Brexiters head does that make sense
IMHO there's been only one real benefit from Brexit and that's been the speed and efficiency of the Covid vaccine rollout to unlock the country sooner.
However lately? Nothing of note and a fair few drawbacks.

That in itself is a lie.

The covid vaccine rollout had nothing to do with Brexit. Even as part of the EU we had a separate body from mainland europe that approves our medicines (the MHRA) and the drugs were manufactured in the UK so there would have been no EU red tape stopping us.

It's a good example of how ingrained brexit lies are though. That one gets a lot of traction despite being completely false. Also, it's highly unlikely that this is what people were voting for in 2016. I didn't hear the word pandemic once in the leave campaign.

I have to agree with St on this one. We were in the EU during the vaccine rollout and always had the ability to do our own thing. Secondly, whilst we started vaccinations earlier than most, we finished later than most too. We really didn't do any better than the rest of Europe.

I can't get it out from behind my pay wall, but The Economist has a pretty good article on the future of the UK car Industry - Pulling the Plug.

Not the whole story, but special references for Brexit and (lack of) a coherent government policy.

Some extracts:

But globalisation also made Britain’s position fragile. It is a middling European production outpost for giant global firms making dispassionate investment decisions far away. That makes it vulnerable to any government policies that reduce its allure. Brexit was that writ large. In 2021 Honda ended manufacturing in Swindon, where it had made 150,000 cars a year, a decision announced after the vote to leave the eu. Despite a free-trade agreement for the industry, Brexit has added reams of paperwork for cars and parts that criss-cross the English Channel and made it harder to bring in foreign managers.

Brexit uncertainty has also stymied investment at a crucial moment for the industry, says David Bailey of Birmingham University. Britain has not entirely lost out in the switch to battery power...... But in a restructuring of an industry that will spend $1.2trn globally by 2030 on electrification these are trifling sums.

Almost everywhere has declined in production, but some more than others:

The country fell from 13th in the carmaking league table in 2016 to 18th five years later.

A long read, even just extracts ... Nissan in Sunderland is highlighted as one of the very few in the UK who have got their move to EV production secured.

Is that directed at The Economist? It is owned by an Italian media company, and most of its journalists, stories and readers are from outside of the UK.

While the UK print edition starts with UK stories, the main print edition and the online edition goes USA, The Americas, Asia, China, Middle East and Africa, Europe and, finally, Britain.
