The Banshees of Inisherin

Anything with Gleeson in is worth watching.
He is in Calvary, very good film that deals with a difficult subject.
Banshees is excellent, directed by Martin McDonagh who also made In Bruges, Seven Psycopaths and Three Billboards.

I quite enjoyed it. It was decent but the people I came out of the cinema with were acting like it was the greatest film ever made which annoyed me a bit and made me like it a little less.

Brilliant film. Its part of a series Channel 4 are showing which includes Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and a few others I can't remember. When I saw them advertised on Channel 4 I said to my son that everyone in the series is a cracking film.

Its certainly a bit strange and made me feel very uneasy. Certainly not an advert for visiting the islands off the West Coast of Ireland.

I was surprised when it won alot of awards, as said not much story, and the story there is, is totally unbelievable. There was even a touch of League of Gentleman about it, but its not labelled a comedy, as far as I know

Question
.has anyone seen this?

It’s on tv this week. Has rave reviews, and has won awards. It’s supposed to be really good. Apparently.

Now I normally like films with a bit of action. Star Wars, Bourne, MI, Hunger Games etc. Happy to watch slower moving films if there’s actually a plot of some description.

But from the million trailers I’ve seen this week, the plot seems to be something like this
..

Spoiler

“I don’t want to be your friend.”
“Why not?”
“I just don’t.”

Doesn’t sound like much of a plot to me. Can anyone let me know whether it’s actually worth watching? I won’t hold it against anyone if you say yes and I end up thinking it’s awful!
Yes I have seen it.
What I can say is if you are looking for a movie which has well defined characters and the intention or plot of the movie is very clear then this may not be for you.
This movie seems to work in the awkwardness of male relationships when there is a big change to them , and situations and environments become alien to either one or two of the participants in those relationships, that dialogue you have given might sound a bit naff but when you watch the movie it's fits in perfectly.
It feels brutal.in parts, not just from some of the extreme actions done by the characters to themselves and others but to the arbitrary decision to end a relationship.
I watch it again, I feel it has hidden plot lines which you only become alert to to after watching at least once.

I used to work with Martin before his scripts got picked up by Radio four , he was constantly writing and sending them off. He got one play on to the radio and it opened the door for him , sound guy, born in the UK to Irish parents, loves the Clash. Just as I was about to go travelling he had given up work and was working on the Beauty Queen of Leanne to appear in the west end, he wanted people from work to go and see it as his guest but I had my flights booked , so I never saw it in the end. He has taken a fair penny of me in bets on football, he's a massive Republic fan and we would always bet on England Ireland in the early 90's..

Google has it down as a “comedy/horror” and I’m honestly not sure it should be classed as either.
Definitely closer to a comedy than a horror. For me it’s correct, as mentioned above it is in a similar vein to the Guard which I found really funny, although not as obvious a comedy as In Bruges.

Its brilliant !

My understanding of the film is that it’s an allegory of the Irish Civil War (which is referenced in the film as being fought on the mainland at that time) ie one time friends and neighbours fighting one another, to their mutual detriment and destruction over causes that are never fully understood. If it’s viewed from that perspective it makes a lot more sense.

I loved it by the way.

Yes he ends it on them looking over at the fighting on the mainland to hammer it home. I love it when they end a film on a metaphor. Have been looking online for the penultimate words spoken but haven't been able to find them as they reference this.

Watched asteroid city the other night. I think the last shot of the film was a police chase with them all shooting at each other. The chase goes past at the beginning of the film and at the end again. The film is about just accepting what life throws at you, rather than chasing something you will never catch. You kind of dismiss it as just a daft Wes Anderson thing when you first see it, but as he ends the film on it you realise that's what it's all been about.
