The abuse that Bettinelli has been getting

I just don't understand why Bettinelli gets so much abuse and criticism. Every week you see goalies making absolute howlers. The Birmingham goalie punched a corner into his own net, and parried a Wing shot into his own net in the game against Boro at St Andrews. Birmingham (coached by ultra defensive Aitor) have conceded more than Boro. Some people on here reckoned the Birmingham goalie is far better than Bettinelli.

Darren Randolph let in a few howlers, I seem to remember a few against Villa.

As far as I know Bettinelli has never made howlers like those. The fact is that a lot of goalie mistakes will result in a goal against. On the other hand Assombalonga and Co can blast shots into row z all afternoon and the score doesn't change.

I think so many people on here correlate 3 goals conceded with the goalie being poor. It just isn't the case. I am sure there is a goalie that Boro could buy that might save 6 shots over the season that Bettinelli wouldn't save, and gain 6 more points (if that). On the other hand, a striker that could score 6 more goals, and turn some of those Boro nil games into wins would bring 9+ points.

That's the only thing I agree with Neil Warnock about. He knows where the priorities are, and they sure as hell they aren't a goalie.

The reason is he doesn't make howlers. I'd rather a keeper make a few good saves and the odd big mistake. It's human nature and all keepers do it.
The reason he gets so much stick is he does nothing well. I find myself shocked if he makes a save. Any save. Any time the ball goes towards the goal and doesn't go past him is a surprise.

I was actually impressed for Bristol City second goal that he made himself big and faced a one on one like an actual keeper. That's the first time I've seen him do that.
I feel like he's barley made 10 "saves" all season and those defending him even say he made a decent save at 0-0 or a save against Brentford. A good keeper should make 5/6 good saves a game if he faces that many shots.

I think its only going to get worse because the rest of the league know he's a weakness and know if you get a shot on target its going in 8 times out of 10 so he'll be tested more and more.

Spot on

To be fair I think he meant all three

Middlesbrough "aren't good enough or strong enough" up-front and need to revamp their forward line in the summer, says Neil Warnock.

“Give me one of them three please. If we had one of those three we win the game tonight.
Think that puts to bed what NW thinks 🤫

You`re right.
Collectively we were crap that night and have been consistently inconsistent for years.
At times we are like Real Madrid.
At other times we couldnt skin a rice pudding.
No one likes taking the pzz an watching us crumble.
But every player has to take responsibility.
There were 11 grown blokes in red shirts on the pitch the other night and they are all culpable for a very poor performance.
A goalie sticks out because hes the last one in the trench.
For me its about the team effort.
But that doesnt mean individuals hide and dont put their hands up - and take responsibility. (y)

The one thing I love about NW is that he just says it as he sees it . He’s too old now to care what anyone thinks and worry if he ‘ upsets ‘ anyone . All this nonsense these days about hurting people’s feelings has enveloped footy as indeed it has the wider world with the snowflake mentality ( damn I swore I’d never use that word on here ) .

I think the criticism is entirely unwarranted to be honest with you. I think Bettinelli is a very competent keeper, and is almost certainly better than the duo of Pears and Stojanovic last season. A natural successor to Randolph between the sticks who just needs time to flourish. Warnock knows his keepers - Paddy Kenny was class for well over a decade, after all.

Strangely, I find myself to be nodding in agreement with almost everyones thoughts on this thread.

I'm sure that we all agree that whilst criticising a player for whatever reason, the mentioning of their
religious background or ethnicity is simply just not on and is frowned upon and quite rightly so.
The replies of support to Yusufboro is proof of that.

I'll admit that whilst sat here on the other side of the planet at midnight or 1am depending on time differences
watching my beloved Boro and watching in horror as BA wheels away with a massive grin on his face after missing
yet another sitter. I find myself trying to burst through my TV or computer screen arms outstretched reaching for
his neck to give his head a shake and mumbling words that I would happily fly back to England to personally
drive him back to Forest.

On the other hand, even though it may be a few games or in BA's case a few weeks or months. I find myself once
again trying with glee to penetrate through the glass in the hope of landing a big kiss on his forehead when he
has at last actually found the back of the net.

Such is the life of a Boro fan.
They either manage to put us on cloud nine or down in the gutter and because of this, lots of stuff that is said
by us all, is said through sheer frustration or spur of the moment reaction with no will at all to cause hurt or harm.

We're a passionate lot and proud and want to see every player that wears our shirt do well.
Sadly that's not always the case but as long as they are wearing the Boro colours we should be supportive
and wish them well when they do depart.

Stay safe all.
Love and best wishes from Oz

Typical footy supporter who can't handle a defeat and have to look for someone to blame for spoiling their day. My only gripe is that it's been happening to often and we still can't do it at the ground! But lets be clear here, I wouldn't boo the players but would no doubt have a bit of a moan with the boys.

At the beginning of the season, I thought we done OK in bringing in Bettenelli as I thought we'd need a bit of stability in that position, with just Stojanovic (sp?) and whoever else ... turns out I was wrong and I don't rate the fella at all. It's 100% a position we need to strengthen in come end of season, but it worries me just how capable we are of attracting better. That's aside from other worries like potentially losing some of our stronger players to other sides to make way for other business we want to do.

Would be nice to get Britt's wages off the books for starters. Wish we could sell Akpom but we ain't got a chance of that happening! 😂 (n)
As for the abuse Bettinelli has been getting, can't say I've been aware of it apart from as expected, people moaning about his performance in a side that wants to be challenging for top-six. He isn't strong enough and we need better. He doesn't deserve to be getting abuse as bad as it sounds though and it certainly won't be helping him improve, he'll be on his way end of the season and we have to hope we're gonna get someone better in. I can't say I trust the club to do so, currently, either!!:unsure:(n)
