Can I be optimistic about cases starting to get lower. Or is it just because last week had big, bank holiday catch up days?

Appears to be genuine, as 7-day average has fallen for 5 consecutive days now. No bank holiday effect in any of those figures.

Now, why this is happening at the same time as schools have returned is a mystery.

I would imagine as it's due to the relaxing of the rules around when kids need to isolate or get a test when they've been in contact with someone who tests positive outside their household.

My son has been near a friend who has tested positive, but as he's not showing symptoms it's a LFT and back to school, that's it.

I went out on a limb a bit, and pointed the below out on the 6th, when cases were rising sharply, as it appeared to me and some others that the sharp rise was a bit artificial, and was underpinned by a natural decline, or just levelling.
Be interesting to see if this (and last week) is school LFD's and later PCR's, and additional household PCR's finding cases which would have gone under the radar, if it's the impact of festival/ BH weekend or if it's just accelerating anyway.

I think (hope) we're still turning a corner, downward, albeit the festivals and school reopenings will give us a bump, which we're seeing now, I just hope it's temporary. Prior to the BH weekend and Schools, we were levelling off and dropping, in England especially. And Scotland seem to have peaked for all age groups already, after their recent rise.

I think we will be heading for a solid decline soon, as some 12-15 get the vax (I'm expecting about 50%), and the over 50's get boosters.

We're seemingly in a pretty solid position now, albeit I still don't get why we're not mandating masks and social distancing in places where they have zero impact on trade (shops and public transport, not pubs and restaurants etc)......unless the government are happy with the increased/ steady infections now, rather than having them in winter. It will give better overall protection, but obviously pounds the NHS when it could have been lessened.

Two jabs and general exposure to the virus seems the best protection for the time being, but soon to be eclipsed by three jabs, and then that may be the end of the vast majority of it, here at least.
