The 9am figures not disclosed yet?

148 is shocking, would be the main news item if it was a plane crash. No deaths for 3 days in Scotland
I wonder if there has been a catch up. For the deadliest country the last two days figures were much lower than that? You’re right though. The rest of Europe is seeing a handful of deaths. We are seeing a ton

That is what it is before people get their panties in a bunch.

The thing is the number of new cases has never came down like the rest of Europe. We started to open up with 1800 new cases a day, places like Germany and Spain left at around 200 with much stricter guidelines.

The new cases is the worrying statistic. It's not going down at all. Deaths are usually people who caught it weeks ago.

Today's headline analysis:

• 820 new cases reported in 24-hour period, up from yesterday's 512
• 7-day average for new cases increases by 5.1% to 579 per day, following 0.8% decrease yesterday
• 7-day average for new cases is 18.6% lower than one week ago (from 26.4% lower yesterday) and 39.7% lower than two weeks ago (from 45.9% lower yesterday and 43.6% lower 7 days ago)
• 148 new deaths in all settings reported in 24-hour period, up from 48 yesterday
• 7-day average for new deaths in all settings increases by 15.6% to 86 per day, following 14.6% decrease yesterday
• 7-day average for new deaths in all settings is 12.4% lower than one week ago (from 27.7% lower yesterday) and 26.5% lower than two weeks ago (from 38.5% lower yesterday and 26.1% lower 7 days ago)

That would be my initial reading too. There was an unusually large fall in yesterday's figures, which has then been cancelled out by today's number. There may well have been an administrative reason for this.

I said a couple of weeks ago that the decline in the death rate appears to be plateauing, i.e. still falling but at a much slower rate. The data since then, with some fluctuation, seems to be broadly confirming that trend so far.

It's funny you mention Scotland which has a higher per million death rate than England (though I have to say I hate these 'league table' comparisons)..

I believe there were 0 in hospital deaths so most of these won't have a positive test and will have happened over the past few weeks / months.

There were 38 hospital deaths of those tested positive announced for England today.
