The 9am figures not disclosed yet?

That's part of the reason for seasonal infections the other is that the virus remains viable for longer at colder less humid environments. I think flu can remain viable out if its host for 23 hours at 43 degrees at higher temperatures it dies outside the host in an hour.
Do we know the viability of covid 19? That might be one of the issues. Different virus but same family: there is a bovine coronavirus that can remain viable up to 7 days outside of a host. The fact viruses aren't "alive" is what usually helps them degrade outside a host and stops them being spread on surfaces. I wonder if Cpvid 19 is particularly hardy which is why it won't go away.

I believe viability on surfaces is quite limited, certainly think I read this in a recent publication. Covid's advantage seems to be in the airborne stakes with more fine droplets/ particles. This is where ventilation becomes the key player. Windows and doors are now being shut, people are more focussed on indoor activities. I do feel we will look back on the lack of ventilation measures in the future as wasted opportunity.

I don't actually know about covid. Not enough information was available when I looked last year.

Clearly, having no ventilation is an issue, but it took years to figure out that the major factor in flu was humidity and temperature. I think guinea pigs were used in the study if I remember correctly.

Lead story on Sky News and 2nd on BBC after a story about old boliers (which to be honest I thought was about my exes) .

The lockdown for winter is coming and once again the pro bojo brigade will lap it up (there was nothing else he could do, we're the only country reporting true figures blah blah blah).

Nearly 2 years in and we are still the worst country in the world at dealing with this thing.

Slightly terrifying stat from yesterday: one fifth of all the world cases were in the UK.

Let that sink in.

One fifth.

Of the planet.

A country that is 0.87% of the world's population had 20% of its covid cases

This is one them posts whereby one angry emoji is just not enough.

Dont worry that will change from 1st January when we start charging for LFTs, we will be flying then as our positive cases plummet

Not wanting to steal Bear or Billy's thunder but here's a stat.

223 deaths reported today.
On the equivalent Tuesday last year, 241 deaths.

Is the vaccine truly having a positive effect?

I'm dreading winter already 😔

we do have about 4 times the number of cases so yes the vaccines are having an effect.

Ferguson said today that we need to ramp up our booster vaccinations and the teen vaccinations or things may get out of control.

Today's headline analysis:

• 43,738 new cases reported in 24-hour period, down from yesterday's 49,156
• 7-day average for new cases increases by 1.7% to 44,890 per day, following 3.0% increase yesterday (and 14th consecutive daily increase)
• 7-day average for new cases is 18.6% higher than one week ago (from 18.7% higher yesterday) and 31.8% higher than two weeks ago (from 29.2% higher yesterday and 8.5% higher 7 days ago)
• 223 new deaths within 28 days of a positive test reported in 24-hour period, up from 45 yesterday
• 7-day average for new deaths within 28 days of a positive test increases by 4.8% to 130.1 per day, following 2.0% increase yesterday (and 4th consecutive daily increase)
• 7-day average for new deaths within 28 days of a positive test is 14.6% higher than one week ago (from 11.4% higher yesterday) and 17.2% higher than two weeks ago (from 11.7% higher yesterday and 13.6% lower 7 days ago)

Highest reported new deaths since 9th March.

Yes I didn't word that as clearly as I intended. The situation would have been much worse if we didn't have the vaccine but in simple numerical comparison terms we're not much better off than 12 months ago when we didn't have the vaccine.

No, I think it will be a tough winter again also, given that freedom day was cautious and irreversible, the stupid ******!

Once again we're screwed because of the incompetence of the government. The working from home will be a struggle to enforce as nobody can afford to heat the house, mind you thanks to the millions of sheep panic buying petrol nobody can afford to drive anywhere either.

Yet blondie keeps his lead in the popularity stakes and possibly the most incompetent government this country has ever had continue to remain untarnished.

If only there was a new variant on the horizon that we could pin this on......

In this case, I hate to be right, but many of us saw this coming. Abandoning all mitigation measures and the whole message "Freedom Day" sent is going to be a disaster.
I await the indignation followed by acquiescence when the figures become scary again and this bunch of charlatans try to impose restrictions. If we'd only retained some sense of caution and kept hammering home the message of personal responsibility then we'd not be going into the winter with so many people close to, if not back to how they behaved before Covid. Add in this new cold/flu that's doing the rounds and you might find the people with co-morbidities are succumbing to Covid as a complication rather than directly despite being vaccinated
