The 1930 World Cup

I’ve always felt that the three world cups before the war shouldn’t really “count” though. At that point England would have been easily the best side in the world. Plus there was all the black shirt shenanigans with Italy.

Even 1950 was a bit mad with no knockouts. Uruguay claim to have been world champions 4 times, but in my honest opinion it’s basically zero.

I was about to reply to the thread but went and had my dinner instead. But my reply would have been that drawing attention to the early days of tournaments is a bit dangerous in that it gives some people the opportunity to discount those tournaments. Well, there you go.

Well, if you were Italian would you be especially proud of those first two titles?

I thought you were implying the win was tarnished as implied by the poster in regards to the Italian one
Not at all. Other than watching the 1966 final and wanting England to win and being pleased when they did I had nothing to do with it so I don't see anything to be proud about.

That's an odd question. I'm English and I'm not especially proud of the one England won.
Ok, but then why would it matter if the first few editions of the tournament were fully recognised or not then?

I don't think the question is that odd. I was insinuating that I wouldn't be too fussed, if I was Italian, if the world quietly 'forgot' about 34 and 38.

Fantastic podcast by Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook. They are releasing one a day throughout the world cup. The first three programmes are about the cup itself then there are 32 about each qualifying country. Each one deals with unbelievable historical facts about each country. Well worth a listen. Starts at episode 252.

Of course l have little choice at the moment being bed bound recovering from my operation to reattach my quad tendon.

You can get them all and more without adverts on Amazon Music
