The ‘whack a mole’ strategy in Leicester...

I'm assuming this is a typo, rather than the Mayor being some sort of travelling lothario servicing the bereaved ladies of Leicester ;)

Well spotted far too early in the morning
Euphemism.😁
Fixed now but probably more interesting before.😁

This certainly feels like the government flexing its muscles. Potentially using Leicester as a test case to prove the localised lockdown approach "works". I would hazard a guess that there are few safe (or newly acquired) Conservative seats in Leicester.

I imagine there have been a number of Google searches by the good people of Leicester for the nearest town with pubs back open on the fourth!
Anything to have a dig eh? Localised lockdown is a great idea and has worked in other countries.

Much though I'd love to blame the government here. Local lockdowns are a fact of life in some places. South Korea does them all the time and it's recorded massively fewer deaths.

South Korea, Germany and France (I think) have done some kind of local lockdowns.
Difference was these were micro local - people with the virus identified, people who came into contact identified and nipped in the bud really quickly.
Germany for instance - R rate shot up to almost 3 and with their quick action (waiting til Thursday FFS) got it below 1 in days.

Exactly.

Why are they locking everybody down, which they aren't by the way as it's just closing shops for good and letting a generation of kids down? Why not pinpoint the area in question using the guys who are on £15 an hour doing the track and trace?

It's a government flexing it's muscles plain and simple. For instance a lockdown of London will NEVER happen again when it's what they should have done at the very beginning and probably spared the rest of the country.

I can assure you there is more than a handful of Conservative Councillors in Leicester. Almost every surrounding town and district is mainly Tory.

The elephant in the room though......
Leicester is an interesting place with a multicultural local population.
Ticks the .....
’Look at how serious we are about protecting our BAME friends’ box nicely.

In fact Leicester City Council has NIL Conservative councillors at the moment after the 2019 local elections. The shires surrounding Leicester do of course but not included in the lockdown. Oadby is the other town included in lockdown and that has 24 Lib Dem councillors and just 2 Tories.

The fact is that Leicester are experiencing a larger rise in number of cases than anywhere else is the reason for it. Someone mentioned the low number of deaths in the City in recent days - the deaths would come in a couple of weeks. As other have said this has been a requirement elsewhere, but i think it will be more prevalent in this country due to our governments approach to lifting the lockdown.
I don't think Finny that the government would go near the idea of trying to show they are protecting BAME communities - all local lockdowns are going to ultimately demonstrate is the inequalities across the country, which they will ultimately be blamed for.

Cheers for that - just looked and Leicester is Labour dominated. The two MPs are in very safe seats. Keith Vaz stepped down last Election from Leicester East and Liz Kendall is the other MP for Labour in the West.

Yep and a recent report that stated half of the infections in this country were imported from Pakistan.

I think the problem with Leicester is no different from anywhere else, in that the lockdown hasn't been enforced. This government have relied on people's common sense and it has been mis-judged. Had we locked down like Spain and Italy we'd be in a far better situation than we are now, much less deaths and a much less infections.

I've managed to cling onto my job by the skin of my teeth and finally things are looking okish. A second wave would be curtains for me so I'm increasingly frustrated that people aren't caring about the rules, and that the government have took a softly softly approach to enforcing them.

Can't see too many people driving to visiting a pub on 4July.

How can they measure R rate in days?

And I notice Hancock's language is still "recommend", "urge", stay at home "as much as you can", will be policed "in some cases", rather than "tell" and "will" be enforced

Leicester horse meeting today - its still going ahead.

* edit - 90 horses running across the card - long meeting of 10 races - horse boxes, travelling lads/driver - jockeys all travelling in from across the UK. Local would be Vets, Farrier, Cleaners, Hospitality, Taxis
So they learned nothing from the Cheltenham festival then?

Funny tho we had days at the beach weeks and weeks ago and we said the same - no evidence of a spike
Then VE celebrations were the next spike - again no evidence
BLM protests - no evidence

Lots of ’the boy who cried wolf stuff’

Just wonder who/what to believe really

I believe that the chances of catching it outdoors are very small. An interviewee on the radio yesterday claimed that around 97% of cases will have been contracted indoors. Today, Andrew Brigden MP claimed that there are many sweatshops in Leicester connected to the garment industry and that they have been working non-stop throughout the lockdown. I've no idea how reliable his information is.
