That is shocking - ref comments to wilder

1. Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
Law5.2
2. Decisions of the referee

Decisions will be made to the best of the referee's ability according to the Laws of the Game and the 'spirit of the game' and will be based on the opinion of the referee who has the discretion to take appropriate action within the framework of the Laws of the Game.

This is plainly not correct as per the laws shown above. This idea has been mentioned so often in commentary that many people believe that is the laws of the games. There used to be a phrase that was commonly used which was” in the referee’s opinion”. Another referee may have given a foul but this referee did not. The referee, when asked why it was not a foul should have used phrases from the laws of the game ( e.g the force of the contact between the player and goalkeeper was not excessive)

It’s been 40 years since I qualified as a referee and have not officiated for 20 years but the reason I stopped was the anger and vitriol from managers, players and supporters who do not appreciate the laws of the game.
There is no reason why the average fan should need to know the exact detail of the rules particularly when they are as vague and unhelpful as the drafting you have posted above. I’m not sure the details add anything at all.

But most fans know the basics that you can’t push or kick somebody off the ball.

You see the type of push which happened yesterday all the time outside the box where two players jump for the ball and one makes a minor last second push from behind which will be just enough to ensure he misses the ball.

Like yesterday, sometimes a ref will give it and sometimes he doesn’t, that’s why you get the debates.

The ref has admitted there was a push by saying the goalkeeper should have been ‘stronger’, he didn’t say there was no infringement.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I put on another post that bad refereeing does happen, it cost us yesterday but no doubt we will benefit ourselves at some point in the season.
No you’re wrong, Chris Wilder cost us the game with his poor team selection, the players also cost us the game with their poor first half performance.

There wasn’t sufficient contact for a foul, as Dimi says you should expect that.

You as a goalkeeper cannot expect to receive zero contact in crowded penalty box.

What part of the ref should not make personal underhand comments to a team about one of their players based on personal opinion are people struggling with.

It’s foul for me - and what about the other QPR player pushing Dijksteel downwards?

I think you’re going OTT with this, he said Steffen should have been stronger, he should have. Steffen made a meal of it and we were punished.

I meant it cost us that particular goal rather than the game.

We will have to disagree with regard to whether or not it was a foul, I think a straight push is different to ‘crowding’ on the goalkeeper.

With regard to Wilder, I think he’s got 10 matches to show we can make a challenge for promotion, it’s up to him.

Can we get a fat b*****d with a Mrs and a video camera to film their other half try to push them when they’re planted on the ground, then try to push them when they’ve jumped into the air to show that it isn’t about strength and the referee has had a nightmare?

It’s Steffen’s fault. He looked for the free kick and didn’t get it.

Here’s someone who knows a thing or two about this kind of scenario…

You'd think this would be enough to end the argument. That is never being given in the Championship and we'd be kicking off if we scored that goal and a foul was given on the keeper.

Steffan should have done better and definitely shouldn't have been looking for the foul there. Hopefully he'll learn you don't get soft free kicks like that in the Championship.

Blaming the ref is looking the in wrong place. You can't concede three goals, misplaces hundreds of passes, a handful of chances, lose 50-50s etc etc and then distil the result down to a moment or two influenced by the referee. It's sport, referees are going to have a different opinion on things that happen based on their unique point of view. It's a mugs game blaming referees - we need to stop doing it.
It's not wilder's standard behaviour, it was Warnocks. Every manager is allowed to complain at some point about refereeing. He won't allow the player to escape without any blame that's pretty clear. I'd expect Dijksteel to be benched and then Lenihan will have to fight to get back in both were poor. Jones will have had a strip torn off about going to grown he's done that in the last 2 games and given chances away. Stay on your feet, delay, deny, deflect.

It's not just Steffen who needs to toughen up.

The referee made a decision which generally follows the generally accepted principles of refereeing in this league.

He gave some valid critique of our keeper which may help him in this league to a coach who asked why a foul wasn't awarded. Not his job, no, but not a crime either.

The team played like they were missing Tav. Not surprising. They had a rollicking and came back stronger. Would have been a worse result of Steffen hadn't made a couple of good saves.

It's going to be a season of ups and downs. It always is. We might just do it the hard way. It's been known.

Agree with @festa5, doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you’re in the air and someone shoves you in the back you’re going to get knocked off balance.

In 2022 that’s a foul all day long. You can get in front of the keeper and stop him from getting out to the ball but once he’s up in the air you can’t just shove him with your entire body.
An ex experienced goalkeeper from boro disagrees. Put festa claims about people ‘haven’t played football’ in a different light too

Well it is subjective, I agree with the ref, if there is any contact if is pretty minimal, if doesn’t look like a deliberate attempt to impede the keeper, the attacker is simply reacting to the approaching ball.

If he can’t cope with that degree of physicality we are going to be in trouble.

The ref I thought was generally very poor but we didn’t lose the game because of him. This looks like deflection of blame to me.
