That is shocking - ref comments to wilder

I don’t think should make biassed comments to a team coach off the pitch no I don’t.

As they are there to ref the game to officiate on the rules no to give comments on the fitness or strength of our players.
Agree entirely with that.
To comment that a player "should be stronger" is the Ref saying the reason the goal happened was because the Goal Keeper was incapable and should have gone in harder to get the ball.
Its the refs job to referee.
The ref is inferring his decision making is based on his "personal opinion" [not "professional"] by commentating on the strengths and weaknesses of individual players.
Disgusting.(n)

The ref definitely should not be making comments like that - if he’s passing comment on a particular incident he needs to say something like i didn’t deem it sufficient contact to award a free kick, simple as that. Highly unprofessional behaviour from the official - it’s not his place to say how players should perform
Neither is it his place to make limp-wristed [homophobic] remarks or jestures.
That ref has a big problem and definitely has an elevated sense of his own self importance.(n)

I think if the referee is asked to give explanation for his decision I don’t think it is unreasonable that he actually gives it. I didn’t think the goal should have been disallowed and I had the advantage unlike the officials of seeing it twice.

I switched onto the match to see Forss get booked, which I thought was an incredibly poor decision and o really thought he would get sent off. Generally thought the ref was awful, a real poor performance, he allowed QPR to effectively con him throughout the game, with faux dives and injuries he really was a homer.

We didn’t lose the game because of the referee though. The manager got his tactics and personnel wrong first half, he criticised the ref and the players he also needs to look a little closer to home.

Can tell a lot of people haven't played much football or any contact sport for that matter (including the ref) if they think being stronger would have made any difference.

If your arms are up like that and you're reaching to catch a ball it's not a question of strength, it's about balance. It takes very little force to nudge a keeper off balance in that situation. Being "stronger" isn't going to help, unless you're built like a heavyweight boxer. In which case you won't have the agility to play pro football anyway.

It's one of the reasons why keepers appear to be so heavily protected, most refs understand this. This one is just demonstrating there he fundamentally doesn't actually understand what he's looking at.

I completely disagree with you. Wilder is finding a way to deflect from a bad performance - and that's fine (although Warnock was always criticised for it) - and is keeping the headlines on the referee rather than his players. But there really isn't anything wrong with what the referee said. If the referee had said "there wasn't enough contact" Wilder would be making similar comments.

I also don't think the decision was wrong. I've watched the goal back on the highlights multiple times and there really isn't enough contact to stop him getting to the ball, he just mistimes his punch. It would be an incredibly soft foul to give and we'd all agree with that if it was the other way round. All keepers make mistakes though, and I'd rather Wilder found any excuse to deflect the criticism away from the
If there’s contact of any kind between a keeper and opposition player it’s a foul - a free kick is awarded to the defending team. That’s the scenario, whether it’s strong contact or minimal is irrelevant really.

Particularly when he is jumping for the ball, at that point unless he can defy the laws of physics then it doesn’t matter how strong or weak he is, it will alter his body position relative to the ball.

The refs comments show a lack of decent education more than anything, surely he could have thought of something better.

The ref made a howler - Wilder has every right to be fuming over it

Agree with @festa5, doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you’re in the air and someone shoves you in the back you’re going to get knocked off balance.

In 2022 that’s a foul all day long. You can get in front of the keeper and stop him from getting out to the ball but once he’s up in the air you can’t just shove him with your entire body.

I've just watched the replay .. Steffen has both feet OFF the ground when the push occurs from behind .. how the hell is he supposed to be "stronger" when he's in mid-air? Use his superhero power of flight to push backwards against the player?

If you freeze the moment before the ball goes in the net you can also see a QPR players arm holding down Dijksteel as well, who is being pushed downwards as the ball comes in - two fouls for the price of one

Still a foul though!
There’s a hand on his left shoulder, it’s hardly a push or a shove. He’s not holding him down, Wilder was clear in his interview that the complaint was a push.

If we’re talking about fouls in this picture, our defender is pulling their player back with both hands on his shirt.

The ref has admitted there was a push by saying the goalkeeper should have been ‘stronger’, he didn’t say there was no infringement.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I put on another post that bad refereeing does happen, it cost us yesterday but no doubt we will benefit ourselves at some point in the season.

By your reasoning this is a free kick to the defending team

1. Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
Law5.2
2. Decisions of the referee

Decisions will be made to the best of the referee's ability according to the Laws of the Game and the 'spirit of the game' and will be based on the opinion of the referee who has the discretion to take appropriate action within the framework of the Laws of the Game.

This is plainly not correct as per the laws shown above. This idea has been mentioned so often in commentary that many people believe that is the laws of the games. There used to be a phrase that was commonly used which was” in the referee’s opinion”. Another referee may have given a foul but this referee did not. The referee, when asked why it was not a foul should have used phrases from the laws of the game ( e.g the force of the contact between the player and goalkeeper was not excessive)

It’s been 40 years since I qualified as a referee and have not officiated for 20 years but the reason I stopped was the anger and vitriol from managers, players and supporters who do not appreciate the laws of the game.

Blaming the ref is looking the in wrong place. You can't concede three goals, misplaces hundreds of passes, a handful of chances, lose 50-50s etc etc and then distil the result down to a moment or two influenced by the referee. It's sport, referees are going to have a different opinion on things that happen based on their unique point of view. It's a mugs game blaming referees - we need to stop doing it.

It’s almost as if a still image doesn’t tell the whole tale.
