Teetotall

I recently knocked alcohol on the head - for a couple of different reasons but mainly to help with my cycling.

I've been off the booze now for just over a month and I would say that it has been quite easy and straightforward to quit. I should say that I'm 57 and never really tried before.

The only time I miss it is Friday and Saturday nights in front of the TV. To the teetotallers on here - when you quit, what is your substitute to drink?

I’m teetotal for 3 months at a time, so not really teetotal, but I need that little blowout every so often, I applaud anyone who can resist the stuff while on holiday or over Christmas for instance. But, while I’m on my little patches of being dry, I drink a lot off coffee, Diet Coke and cucumber water

I’m a lifelong teetoller. I was brought up in a Methodist family who were never dogmatic about it, we just never had any alcohol in the house and never had any routine or culture around drinking.

I’ve always liked very hot strong tea or very cold water. For a flavour lime and soda is very nice.

I gave up alcohol 25 years ago. I am not strictly teetotal as I will occasionally enjoy a pint of cider, glass of wine etc. when the mood and situation allows.
I do drink gallons of diet drinks, not sure if that is any better for you than alcohol. Otherwise lots of cold water, add your own flavouring to it.
You will find that your ability to deal with alcohol diminishes, a single pint can put me in a happy place.
I was also from a methodist family, but who did drink a little, however I rebelled in my student years and twenties and was a heavy drinker.

Had to cut down over a year ago and now I'm out once a week. Hot drinks are tea and coffee, both without milk or sugar. Coke, orangeade, lemonade, ginger beer etc. Found that the famous brands are nowhere near the best for all of them. Often the supermarkets own brand drinks are nicer.

I have always been a social drinker - I used to love going to the pub for the craic and I never really considered quitting but since the lockdown obviously the pub wasn't an option. Because of Mrs V's health issues, we've decided to keep that going when they re-opened and tbh - I don't miss it either.

Like I said earlier the only time I've missed the drink is sat in front of a movie. I tried Ginger Beer last night but it didn't feel quite right. Might try alcohol free wine.

I do love my tea but I'm very sensitive to caffeine unfortunately.

Non alcoholic gin is a godsend - particularly Seedlip.

Also Punk AF, Becks Blue and Heineken 0% are all pretty good non alcoholic beers- Peroni non alcoholic is horrible IMHO.

Oh nooooo! That Seedlip stuff is rank!

I got handed a sample of this in the centre of Leeds last year - I couldn't drink it! Mind you, I'm not a fan of Gin either

If you don't like gin then I can see why you wouldn't like it, but as someone who loves gin I find it a really good substitute - assume you didn't drink the sample neat rather than mixed with a good tonic ?

There was a bit of dirt on my screen and I said to myself, "What the hell has the fact that he's 5 foot 7 got to do with anything?" :cautious:

There are some “ok” non-alcoholic craft beers. Have a look on Beer Hawk. I’d say Thornbridge “zero five” is decent, and Schneiderweisse have a good one.

Exactly like me Foggy .... no alcohol in the house - my dad was in a terrible car accident where the car engine ended up on his stomach (happened before i was born) after going to a christmas party - this was 1979 ... he never drank after that and my mam doesn't drink either

So alcohol has never been a part of my life... still get loads of 'stick' for not drinking off the idiots... "I'm not a real man" etc, etc

Never been much of a drinker. Never drink in the house, so with pubs off the menu, just don't bother and I honestly don't miss it.

Been off it since March & even before drank very little, maybe 2-4 bottles a fortnight / month....
Don't miss it at all - always been more into my tea & that is consumed big time...
Pepsi Max for cold drinks else water.... drinking more full fat milk, since lock down....
