Teesside airport £10m bailout while operator departs

hopefully when the european holiday season is in full flow we will have more flights from the airport. It could well end up as a valuable asset to our area.
I believe it was losing money even as it was hitting record numbers because of the investment required on an ongoing basis

by way of comparison the best ever year teesside had has was 1m passengers (under Peel, I might add, who everyone says was clueless).

newcastle had that during covid, a drop from their usual 5m+ annual passengers

during Covid; Teesside had 38k.

How do I know who the right people are , I just hope those in charge now are .
Those in charge now are basically the internal airport team. Just like it is for security after they ended the contracts as reported by the gazette. I’m sure they know more than Stobart or Peel though, all will be well. A £10m bailout for now and I’m sure it will be printing cash in no time at all.

Fact is, Teesside Airport has never ever in it's history made a profit in any year. Most people involved in aviation doubt it ever will.

I wonder how Leeds and Newcastle do . The surrounding towns probably need to grow and attract more bigger business to have a chance of the air port succeeding

Newcastle can only expand so far and population growth means it will only become more overcrowded and chaotic over time. At some point, more airlines will see Teesside as a viable option.

I’d like to see them being clever with routes and maybe offer direct flights to some places Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester don’t.

A bit of good news, Tui are going to run flights to Antalya, Turkey. More of this please

It is good news, and testament that there is demand. No way TUI would have added a second route before the first one has even taken off without significant demand.

No doubt this announcement was brought forward following the recent news however.

It needs scheduled flights to stand any chance of being a succes.
^^^^ Exactly this. That and better infrastructure - the railway station, rental cars etc. I have never even considered Teesside when I've been travelling. Either Manchester, or more likely, Newcastle.

Stobart only pulled out due to their own internal financial problems.

my understanding was they were signed into a 10 year deal which prohibited them from selling the sake to a third party in order to get exclusive access to the airport in the same way they have with south end and Carlisle.

they couldn’t sell out their share as they could have been sued for breach of contract and they were not able to keep running the airport in their current financial mess so the only option they had to save themselves was to hand back their 25%.

to be honest it’s a win win for the airport as they have sold 25%, then had Stobart do the first two years of hard work and getting the right team in place then took back the 25% for free.

The airport vanity project was simply to herd the sheep. Its still working, those who voted for houchan still think he's doing a wonderful job despite been unable to name much worthwhile that he's achieved.
Same with the current government

OK, we get it. You don't like the bloke. At least show some respect and spell his name correctly

The airport and freeport, both in the same propaganda envelope 😒

I'm no Tory by any stretch of the imagination, despise all that they stand for. Their ranks populated by entitled self important buffoons...... not least the one in charge.

So it pains me to say at least the area can see some direct investment for a change.
The freeport remains to be seen along with any benefits from the 'Treasury Move' to Darlington, both could and will likely to be more Tory bluster.
But at least there has been investment into the airport.

Would you lot rather it was sold for housing as it was headed?
Sometimes people complain just for the sake of it.

I've said it time and again.... Teesside has been failed again and again by successive governments of all persuations..... not least Blairs. We had real representation with both Milburn and Blair hands on yet got nothing. Sheffield with Blunkett and Hull with Prescott got £10 millions pumped into them and what did we get? MIMA with some nice free toilets.

And it tragically looks like the electorate agree with me.

Well said. I despise most Tories and don’t particularly like Houchen, but once the airport is gone, we’ll never have another one. As populations and demands on Newcastle airport grow, it will become more viable for passengers and airlines. There’s no reason it can’t be a success long term. We just need to build the infrastucture to support it.

After all the Tory electoral slush fund public cash invested into it of course it needs to succeed, but there are a lot of questions that need answering about the structure of ownership and who does profit from it that never get answered beyond “stop talking the area down”

trouble is teesside has a 10 year plan whereas newcastle already has an expansion plan leading up to 2035.
It’s going to be a long time until newcastle runs out of capacity and likewise leeds, especially with passenger numbers being down due to Covid and recession, seems unlikely we can keep chucking money at it until it does.

If the stats posted above that it’s never ever turned a profit are true then that’s fairly telling especially how far away we are from peels record numbers.

that said sometimes money being spent on something can be loss leading if it has a massive economic benefit to the area and is gone value for money, but there is a lot of secrecy around the airport from houchen and we only get given the good news

I think that just shows how badly it was being mismanaged by Peel. There really is no reason for it not to be successful with the right management and infrastructure in place. Numbers were heading in the right direction before the pandemic and appear to have picked up recently with the addition of new routes.

I agree the secrecy is a concern, but I also understand that every bit of news is jumped on and spun immediately for policital point scoring. We must have some of the worst councillors in the country for this. Even the independents have their allegiances. Nobody will acknowledge a good idea by the opposition or a bad one by their allies.
