Team vs Sunderland

What would your team be?

Mine would be

Dieng

Smith
Fry
McNair
VDB if available, would be good against Roberts who will be coming inside on his left foot against VDBS stronger right foot. If not then I would stick with Engel who maybe should stay in anyway to keep confidence high.

Howson
Hackney

Jones
Crooks
McGree

Coburn - nearly went LL for this but feel his pace could make him a valuable second half sub again.

I think it will be;

Dieng

Smith
Fry
Lenihan
Engel

Howson
Hackney

McGree
Crooks
Jones

Coburn

I would be tempted to put Rav in at LB, and Forss to help Smith out. But I think MC will go with the above.

Yeah Lenihan is my favourite centre back out of the ones we have but I’d feel harsh on Paddy he’s doing well. And he won’t drop Fry after making him skipper during the week.

The other thing is this bug going around the squad, by all accounts Lenihan and Howson have had it. So hopefully no one else has picked it up

really good point, it will be really tough for Roberts to get his shot away. Inverted Fullbacks, it's the future, to combat the tired old inverted wingers concept.

The team I'd put out.

--------------Dieng------------
Smith--McNair--Lenihan--VDB
---Howson----Hackney-------
Jones---Crooks----McGree
--------Coburn------------

The team I think he'll play

--------------Dieng------------
Smith--Fry--Lenihan--Engels
---Howson----Hackney-------
Jones---Crooks----McGree
--------Coburn------------

That's assuming Lenihan makes it...which I believe he will.

.................Dieng

Smith...Fry..Lenihan...Engel

.......Howson...Hackney

Forss.....Crooks.....McGree

................Coburn

Jones and Lath to come on as impact subs. Could play Greenwood instead of Crooks, as thought he looked good in spells the other night and isn't afraid to shoot. He might try a bit too hard against the Mackems though.

Yeah, if he’s available I really feel he could do a good job on him, Makes sense cos Roberts ain’t ever gonna go down the line on his right. Just got to hope Smith can keep Clarke quiet too, easier said than done.

As well as Engel played the other night, I'm not sure this is the game for him. Sunderland play with much more intensity than Cardiff and will swarm around us like flies. They will likely target him as a weak link defensively. VDB for me if fit.

He was on bench on Tuesday

Stop Clarke from cutting inside on his right peg and that's pretty much job done.

Clarke refuses to go on his left. He doesn't have a left foot.

Even if Smith thinks Clarke is going to do him down his flank, let him, just let him go down the wing on to his left foot....just don't let him cut in, at any opportunity.

Also, I think Fry needs dropping.

Cardiff could have easily gone 1-0 up in that first half if Karlan Grant scored that 1v1, which was due to an error from Fry...again.

Get what you’re saying but I’m actually a big fan of Jones defensively, think he’s good at pressing the full back and wins the ball for us. Tbh both Jones and Forss have brilliant work rate. We are lucky.

I agree its very close and probably down to preference.

I just think the Forss of last season had a bit more of a solid all round game - down to MC's coaching.

You are right though, both will hopefully perform to the same level

It will be risky starting Engel against Sunderland but I feel we have to take the risk, as I feel there's an opportunity now for him to really grow in confidence and find his feet.

I'm also OCD about players playing in their natural position, so feel we should only really be playing VDB LB as a last resort.

Think Crooks will start but I'd be tempted to start Greenwood, as he'll have a point to prove and will be fired up.
