I'm very observant, always on the alert 24/7 !!!

And it hasn't gone unnoticed to me that a high percentage of taxi drivers choose Skoda.

They must know, their living depends on it.

I wonder what the main reasons are ??? 🤔

Hi Torchy. I was in one the other week that had about 450k on the clock. Probably the reason why they go forever.

The cars are generally reliable workhorses. The are VW Group cars that sell for relatively low prices, unlike say Audis and VW brand which use the same parts.

I have noticed driving instructors are using them more and more too, particularly the Fabia.

I used to say Ford were mid range pricing and Skoda were cheaper than Ford when I checked for myself.

The only definite cheap stuff nowadays are the Romanian, Indian and Chinese cars, unless anyone knows any different.

VW Diesel Engines that can handle anything up to 500k miles with regular services, clutch and gearboxes that last upto 200k miles if driven well.

Cam belts only need changing every 130k miles

My last octavia was still on the original brake discs when I got rid of it at 106k miles never cost me anything other than tyres, wiper blades and servicing.

The one I had before it had155k when I got rid and outside of tyres, a cam belt change and regular servicing, it only ever needed one set of brake discs and pads.

A Redcar taxi driver, after there had been flooding in the area, told me that his Octavia actually floated after attempting to drive through a dip in the road. Would you believe it, the things are amphibious too!

I remember going to the Mercedes factory in Stuttgart in 2006 and seeing a Mercedes Taxi that had done over 1 million miles (at work in Solanaki - Greece). As a generalisation German style cars are built to last.

I used to work in Blackburn where nearly every taxi was a Toyota Avensis, asked a taxi driver he said the only thing that wears out on them is the driver's seat! Leeds taxis seemed to favour the Toyota Prius a few years ago. My guess, it is perhaps to do with a someone local who looks after the taxis for buttons and prefers the Skoda?

Prius tends to be the taxi of choice in big cities. In London they faced less taxing, but aside from this they're often a lot better on fuel for city conditions as in slow moving traffic they can be driven entirely off the battery?

Skodas always seem really roomy and they have massive boots which is helpful for taking passengers to airports etc. I hate getting in a taxi with no leg room behind the driver with their seat back but never seems to be a problem in a skoda.

Why when we have the best designers and best engineers.. why do German car manufacturers make the best cars?

Any old motorheads on here know the name Tony Sugden? Used to race a Skoda coupe with a 2 litre, twin turbo Cosworth engine. Went like **** off a shovel

Accountants.

Mercedes (for example) employ good engineers, we (used to) employ accountants to run our motor industry...
Lotus had some fantastic engineers..
But then look at Saab.. fantastic engineers
Volvo too!

Americans can sell tons of utter todd.. pure marketing

Japanese sold millions of cars with efficient manufacturing lines..

Germany.. how firctgey come out on top?

I’ve just driven home from Aberdeen in my Octavia diesel. A beautiful drive the whole way with an average MPG of 57.
