Tavernier

He set up a goal yesterday with a fine cross, but was also napping and allowed a man to run off him and score which isn't like him.

Seen that opta stat a couple of times and wonder what the criteria is. What counts as a dribble? Tav carries the ball well, but I wouldn't say he's a dribbler. Doesn't tend to beat a man too often. But then again you don't really see dribblers anymore, not to the extent you used to.

The problem is, and I know losing him has screwed is royally, he wasn't worth 25m at the time as no one saw fit to outbid on 10m.

That's the conundrum though. He might not have been worth more than £12m to anyone else, but he was worth far more than that to us. Many fans knew it and so, I'm guessing, did Wilder.

Gyokeres wasn't worth £18m or whatever to anyone, but Coventry decided he was to them so didn't sell.

Tav was a good championship midfielder. The fee was about right. He was replaceable. The problem is we didn't even attempt to replace him.

We could've sold him for £100m but we didn't spend any of what we did receive so the squad wouldn't be any better anyway. The bank balance would just look better.

We replaced him with mowatt a player who is a bigger name and had more pedigree. But some of us knew that Tavs strengths are mowatts weaknesses, but either our manager, recruitment team or both didn't think things through.

Don't think you can blame club for Tav going, it was widely reported at the time that he wanted to go the season before but was persuaded to give it one more year. We got no where near promotion so it would have been a d*ck move by the club to stand in his way by making unrealistic demands. Best we could do was accept the highest bid which was 10m from Bournemouth. If Tav fancied the move then shake his hand and move on. He was moving into last 2 years on contract and wouldn't sign another so there was no better option for the club. Where the club absolutely failed was in planning to replace him when they must have known what was coming.

People say this. First of all we've no idea if there really was such an agreement. But if there was this "gentlemen's agreement" in place it would surely have been along the lines of "if an acceptable offer comes in we'll let you go".

Not.

"We'll accept the highest bid from anyone no matter how low and far off our valuation it is".

No club operates like that. If that was the case his agent has played a blinder.

I suspect the reality is the club just decided they wanted the money and, like some fans thought, they'd easily be able to replace him and keep the difference.

They got it badly wrong. Not for the first time.

huh?

Bournemouth have done about as well as they could with the squad they have, I initially had them down as coming bottom, until Forest went on a mad spending spree and upset their team shape, and sprit. If Forest start to click it might still happen.

Anyway Bournemouth 1 win in 7 now, heading south rapidly, just 2 points above the drop. Leeds away and Everton home in the league, get no wins out of those and they'll be on a serious slide and facing 4 difficult league games that could see them rooted in the bottom 3.

The question for his career is, 'Has he done enough for another prem team to take a punt on him?'

Well Neil Warnock said outright that was the case. He might have been a bullshitter in a lot of ways but I see no reason why he would say that if it wasn't true. Seems a lot of revision of history when it comes to Tav. He was completely unproven in the prem and a lot of boro fans were regularly calling for him to be dropped. No one was interested in paying more than 10m for him. You can criticise the club for agreeing to let him go but what if they hadn't,,? He might have left a year ago for a lot less. If they shook hands on a gentleman's agreement last year then I wouldn't criticize them for abiding by it, it matters how you treat people that work for you.

I doubt it'd have been up to Warnock, but anyway that's by the by. We'll never know, it's not been officially confirmed by anyone. Wilder was surprised he was leaving so if there was such an agreement no-one bothered telling the manager at the time.

What if the best offer was £2m then. We still should have let him go based on that should we?

If they hadn't let him go he'd likely have knuckled down and worked to put himself in the shop window for January or the summer. Like most players do in that situation.

Was Tav really that good in the 20/21 season for the club to accept the inevitability that a 'bigger'/Premiership team were going to come in for him and therefore offer a 'gentlemans agreement' ..... even with 3 years contract remaining. My recollection is that he wasn't in great form back then and neither was he in the first half of the 21/22 season ..... so I cannot believe he would have been angling for a move. He hit form in the second half of last season and we got a fair price for him from a club that were at the right level for his ability. As others have stated...... the only problem is that we never so much as attempted to replace him.

This season is reminiscent of our last under Gareth in the Premiership. The club seem to have decided.....again..... that it's not neccesssary to sign midfield players. Gareth had to make do with using centre halves and full backs to plug the gaps left from the... midfielder firesale... leading up to the start of that season.
