Tavernier offer accepted - official now

Tav is ahead of Jones in career development. He's played 155 times over a few seasons. Jones has had half a good season. If he pushes on and has a good season this year then I would expect he will generate some interest but at the moment I don't think there will be that much interest in actually buying him right now, more like people may have marked him as one to keep an eye on.
I doubt at this moment anyone would take a punt over 5m simply because he hasn't done it for more than about 25 games. If he has a great season and we don't go up, you can triple that. There is zero chance we will sell him for 5, 15 is different.

It wasn’t too long ago that people were wanting us to aspire to the Brentford model of selling assets and developing players in a sustainability type model. Now that it appears we are doing it it is not liked. In respect of Tav if he would not extend his contract further then his value is going down. It looks as if Bournemouth were the only club interested so the price we got is the best we could have got. His agent will have been touting him around and if Bournemouth are the only gig in town then what you gonna do?

They want the Brentford model except the part where we sell players :ROFLMAO:

The important thing is that our recruitment is right now, this can't be another Adama situation where we reinvested the money on Saville and Flint that had nowhere to go really in terms of value. Although we did sign McNair in that window as well, perfect example of the type of signing we should be making, he was 22/23 year old, plenty of room to grow as a player and in value.

Yeah, sell Bamford and spend the profit on loaning Jordan Hugill for a season..

It is what it is.....timing not ideal, but that's probably out of our hands. We found and nurtured Tav, what's to say we can't do likewise with another academy lad.....meanwhile we go with Riley McGree, who to me while not the same type of player as Tav provides more of a goal threat, but provides less energy. I can see McNair getting a run in midfield too, with Hackney and Gibson maybe seizing the opportunity ahead of a new signing. No need to panic buy yet!

In fairness the players we are being linked with this summer are either exciting or intriguing. Age profile is better, player potential seems better, targeting positions that need strengthening rather than overloading positions. Wilder is obviously a bit frustrated as he, like us can see the potential of what can be achieved but seems on the same page as the club. No digs at the hierarchy, unlike Warnock last year. I like it.

On the other hand, young players will see the Boro as a good place to develop and somewhere they’ll be allowed to leave if the chance of career progression comes along. Like Southampton, for example, or Brighton or Brentford. You can’t stand in the way of a player moving on to a higher level, especially when they’ve applied themselves and done a good job for you.

One of the Southampton staff was on the Monday Night Club on 5Live last season and said young players want to know they’ll be allowed to leave if bigger clubs want them. You just have to plan properly. Southampton have factored this into their model and generate cash through it so they can be competitive.

Young players will look at Tav and Spence and think “if I go there and do well and a bigger club or team higher up the pyramid comes in, they’ll let me go.” We have to be pragmatic. This is part of developing young players, accepting that at some point they’ll move on.

This is what Boro should be tapping into IMO. Developing young talent for the first team with an eye on generating income through selling. For too long we haven’t done that anywhere near enough.
I agree with that 100 percent. The tav transfer will have an impact , but I'd rather we continued on this profit making model than go back to how things were!

If we had a bigger squad I doubt people would be so concerned about this. It's not so much Tav is irreplaceable (although he is excellent at championship level) but the fact he was a big player in an already threadbare squad and as it stands it leaves a big hole.

The jury is still out on McGree for me, he's been hit and miss.

We'll only really know the impact of this by the end of the window. It's all very well citing the "Brentford model" but that model also includes bringing in a lot of players to replace those leaving. As it stands we've brought in 2 permanent signings so far. I'm sure we'll be bringing in more, but as it stands the squad is weak and we don't actually have that many "assets".

When Brentford were selling their big assets I doubt they had a squad of only approx 15 first team players and in many cases already had replacements signed. Bit easy to stomach it as fans in that scenario.

I'm sure we'll get there but I do understand the concerns. The last few years we've set out with lofty ambitions in the transfer market and yet always seem to fall short. That said, we've not had the budget available that we do this time around, so I'm optimistic.

Good luck to him £12m is good fee again for Tavs ability, we now have to continue the squad re build and get it strong enough for a promotion push come close of the Transfer window.

Looking at a lot of the squads in the champo today a lot of squads need some work, burnley, huddersfield both really poor.

Alot of journey men been picked up by other squads not what we should be looking at, we need young atheletic and dynamic talent, with aggression and attitude to learn and develop, which I believe we will have, Come on Boys !

Undervalued for me. I think we'd have been able to get that next summer after a season under Wilder despite the fact he'd only have a year left on his contract.

Not convinced we're good negotiators at all. I think we're pushovers compared to a lot of other clubs.
