Tav to Bournemouth confirmed

He had 2 years left on his deal, he was an important player to us, it was the eve of the season, we'll have little time to replace him and everyone now knows we have £10m and are desperate to replace him.

When you consider Bristol City got £20m for Adam Webster, how have we ended up with only £2m more for both Spence AND Tavernier
He had 2 years left on his deal but it was already said last year that we had to persuade him to give us one last shot so he obviously wasn't going to sign an extension to his deal that would keep him here. So we could have played hardball but by all accounts the players reps have made it clear it was time for him to move on, so we'd have a disheartened player entering the last year of his deal at the start of next season meaning we then risk losing him for nothing or on a cut price deal. He is an important player, but it is what it is and we have the opportunity now to recruit someone with a longer contract

Good luck to Tav, the Premier League is the place to play in.
Funny how Bournemouth has always been regarded as a sleepy, possibly posh venue for old retirees. Now apparently it’s been taken over by the RussIans 😄.

Didn’t we pick him up as a Newcastle academy reject? (I may be wrong with that).

But either way, it’s another great result for the academy, our players always seem to be in demand either at a higher or lower level.

Good luck to Tav, young players who have come through the ranks always move on eventually, I’m sure he will find a deckchair to fit him on Bmouth beach.

Good luck to the lad. He's been a good player for Boro and deserves a crack at the Premier League. Bournemouth is a lovely place to be, but I still think it's a bit of an odd move for him. I would have understood a move to Southampton or Brighton more.

The problem with top end championship players that are probably of the level to play in the Prem, the fee generally tends to look on the small side regardless as invariably that player is irreplaceable.

Hypothetically we could have got 20 mil for Tav and we still wouldn't be able to bring a player of his quality with the same attributes as quite simply they wouldn't come here to play in the championship.

We've got to hope the recruitment team pull a rabbit out the hat.

Did we though? I know Warnock blathered on about him Fry and McNair moving on if we didn't go up last year (good of him given he knew he wouldn't be here himself to have to deal with it) so I suppose there was that implication, but I've never seen anything else saying that it was the definitely the case.

Wilder's comments over the summer suggest if there was such an agreement he wasn't aware of it. He's stated at various points he wasn't expecting any more departures and only last week he was telling fans that Tav hadn't asked to leave.

Lets hope we move quickly to get his replacement in, as we missed him saturday.

Not sure we missed him. We missed someone putting away gilt edged chances ie a goal poacher and we would’ve won the game - just like last season with tav in the team
Goodbye tav
Hope you enjoy the cash
I’m sure you will but you ain’t furthering your career IMHO.

it took Steve Bruce, not exactly the most tactically aware manager, 45 minutes to work out that our weak point was our left hand side channel, specifically the pocket of space where Tav was so good at recovery runs and transitions.

We ABSOLUTELY did miss tav and will do all season, unless we can sign a player better defensively than mcgree, or mcgree develops that side of his game.

From a footballing point of view (easy to say as a Boro fan mind) he'd have been better off staying a year I think. He'd just had his best half a season, was becoming our main man in midfield and under Wilder was really starting to kick on in a system that could have been tailor made for him.

Another year of that, with all the confidence and experience of being the main man, I think would've meant he'd have had offers from better clubs than Bournemouth (no disrespect to them) and would've been better placed to handle the transition to the prem and hit the ground running.

Hard to blame him for not turning the chance and the money down and his workrate alone will probably mean he'll do ok for them. But he's only really just figured out how to get the best out of himself on a consistent basis and he's now got to almost start all over again with new team mates, manager and tactics. He might struggle a bit initially I think.

If the rumours of them wanting him to play wing back are true I think he'll struggle a lot.

I don’t get this assertion that they’ve had our pants down. I think £12 million odd is a good fee, and was clearly all anybody was willing to pay. He is a good player but he’s really not as good as some of our fans make out. Fans always think they should get more money for their own players, but reality is they are only worth what someone is willing to pay, not fan fantasy football figures.
That said, best of luck to the lad, he always gave his all, never hid when he was having an off game, and I hope he goes on to do well.
I think the point is not that tav is that great, he's a decent all rounder at best, but its more that other clubs seem to command huge fees for players I've certainly never heard of. Like the other poster said, 20 million for webster????? Its like being a boro player in itself decreases the value. The feeling is that if Tav played for Brentford he'd be going for 15 -20 million and spence 20 -25.

My comment was on your line about the fee being too small.

He's worth what a buying club is willing to pay for him, I didn't see anybody coming in with bids of £20m. Keeping him for another year, and us not getting promoted this year, would see him value drop significantly lower than £12m.

As long as he's replaced, which with the money we have I believe we can replace him with someone equally as good if not better, then we move on. Good luck at Bournemouth but my interest in him ends there really. He doesn't want to be a Boro player so f**k him.
Ahh, there in lies the argument, he's worth what a buy club is prepared to pay, or what a selling club is prepared to sell for. Now, let's say we held onto him for another 3 weeks (like other clubs seem to do), yes it could have gone wrong but just maybe we'd have commanded 5 million more or perhaps other clubs would have entered the race.

He also has a value to MFC, & it doesn't matter what the buying club is willing to pay, if it doesn't meet that valuation the club is unlikely to sell.

Like others on here I'm surprised that MFC valued him so lowly that £10m+ add ons was considered an acceptable offer.
