Suprised to see Stewart Downing released at Blackburn

Thought he would have secured more than a 12 month contract, along with Danny Graham & Richard Smallwood

He's not been released yet, he's just coming to the end of his contract, but he's a soon to be 36 year old winger.

There's not much sense in Blackburn offering him a long term contract, especially when nobody knows when football is going to return properly. He's at an age where sporting decline is more rapid too, so every month counts.

Not so long ago there was talk of both parties keen on extending his contract, probably a decision made by Blackburn as they won't need to pay him in their current financial position.

Does his contract run out in June?

If so, will they want him to stay if the league continues beyond June to the new end date and if you are said footballer, would you really give 100%. This is not a slant at Downing by any means but just stating how the mind set of players could be changed.

He'd cost peanuts and there's some big earners coming to the end of their contracts. So quite possibly but is he the calibre of player we're now looking at?

Many on that Gazette list will sign new contracts or would have already but for the premature halt to the season. As Ben said it's simply a list of players out of contract at the end of the season. I think Downing will be offered another year by Mowbray.

They may well be big earners. So its no surprise that a Club with financial issues (which Club in the EFL hasn't) being offloaded and off the wage bill.

Well Danny Graham obviously would " cost peanuts" as he's coming to the end of his contract, but his wages could be out of Boro's reach, otherwise we would not let the best centre back in the Championship go when we could retain him for "a pittance " of £30,000 a week. 😯
