Sunshine on Tees

I’m not sure our fans have the vocal range for anything too difficult.

I mean those Hibs fans have clearly had singing lessons at school, we are years and years behind that even if we brought in voice coaches next week.

Do we hit all the right notes even doing Pigbag?
That's silly, we are no better or no worse than any other crowd. When a few thousand people aim at the same note it's going to average out somewhere near, and when we sang WSO or YNWA it sounded no different to anyone else. The difference is that we no longer sing that kind of song with sustained notes unfortunately, because we don't have one.

There is a link between Sunshine on Leith and Teesside as readers of Issue 666 Fly Me To The Moon will have learned.

Chris Bartley interveiwed Charlie Reid of The Proclaimers -

Q: How did you feel when ‘Sunshine On Leith’ was adopted by Hibs fans in 1990 during the ‘Hands Off Hibs’ campaign?
Charlie:
Sunshine on Leith has really been adopted by the support over the years. As Hibs fans, you can imagine how much that means.

Here is the answer that shows the not insignificant link between the Proclaimers and Teesside.

Q: We have just recently celebrated our 30th anniversary at the Riverside. Have you ever been to either the Riverside or our previous ground, Ayresome Park?
Charlie
: Never been to either ground but our mum was born in Stockton and went to some matches at the old stadium.

So Stockton Town should adopt it then.

Not really.

You're older, you like your protest songs from 80 years ago.

The reason it's died off is because it doesn't resonate with younger fans, it's not because fans that don't like it are stupid.
Just as you're not stupid for liking it.

Tastes change, and We Shall Overcome had its day.
Yeah, I'm glad Liverpool have binned off you'll never walk alone

If YNWA had never been adopted officially by Liverpool and stopped being sang regularly for 30+ years, it wouldn’t make a comeback now.

The reason it's survived is because it never went away and the club has actively promoted it for the last 60 years.

None of that is a barrier to us singing it now.

Fair comment, I actually think the Mackems and Geordies are worse singers, they have problems with diction in my opinion.

I'd say it's quite an obvious answer for why it hasn't at any point caught on again in the last few years when there's been an active search for a club anthem.

Most fans don't care for it, it's just an old song from a bygone era to many.

Most of the people wanting it back were around during that era, it's not been sang regularly since the early 1990s.

We shall overcome i absolutely hate to the point I boo it when I ever I hear it sung. Steel river is gash as well. We need to come up with something new and uplifting. It doesn't need to be about our industrial heritage.

I must admit that there is something that I find slightly jarring, and that is football songs sung in different accents - and I imagine ours is the same for others - and when I hear 'how shoit must yew be' it just sounds weird.

Sounds like we have a claim to it then, lets get it going, imitation is the best form of flattery after all!

Nearly every song sang at a football ground is ripped off from someone else, even Celtic nicked YNWA.

Lieth isn't on Teesside and YNWA doesn't mention Liverpool, Glasgow or Dortmund.
