Sunderland vs Sheffield United

How do 4 of those results really matter to us?

The only one there that really impacts us is Sheffield United currently winning.

Burnley have never been relevant to us.
Blackburn and Millwall are not finishing 2nd, Luton very probably are not.

Our play-off spot is just as secure as it was before this round of fixtures, that's a plus.

If Sheff Utd don't finish second now they will have imploded pretty spectacularly. They have nine games, win just 4 and draw 2 will put them on 84 points, which is pretty much unassailable. However if they do implode, then Luton are certainly in the race to catch them. With a home game against Boro you'd say they have just as much chance as Boro.

It's not all doom and gloom for Sunderland fans.

On the one hand, they will be feeling pretty miserable right now but on the other hand,
they will be able to count how many games are left . ;)

I would quite happily take that play off spot if I'm been honest, Luton, Millwall and Blackburn, you would have to surely fancy our chances with all due respect to the other teams involved.

Turn out like last night and I wouldn’t fancy our chances against any of them.

Hopefully we bounce back Saturday with a good win.
Yeah. We’ve turned out like last night a small handful of times under Carrick, considerably less than virtually any other manager I can think of in our history (certainly in my lifetime).

There’s no doubt that last night was 2 points dropped but it was never going to be plain sailing. If we do get 2nd it will be a nervy, tight, nail-biting end to the season with lots of twists and turns still to come. I was never expecting us to get 6 points this week, Blades to lose and we just ruthlessly romp home by mid-April whilst the Blades fall apart.

If it is to be Millwall in the play offs it's all about holding firm at The Den.
If we can get through that I think we'd have far to much quality for them at home.

I also think we'd have to much quality for Blackburn or Luton in a one off game on the big Wembley pitch
Any side that includes anyone bar Burnley. It’ll most likely be play offs for us though imo

Sunderland have won just 6 home games all season and has the 18th best home record in the division.....they didn't beat much,l. Utd haven't played "well" in 15 matches, that is going to change soon. They will have far tougher tests in the next few weeks,I think we'll be on their coat tails again in 3 matches.

It's funny how two of the times have been when we had a chance to close the gap to one point.
As a Blades fan said on their forum, we've got within four points twice, and shat ourselves twice.
I think that could be a concern for the play-offs picture. We need to be more worried about the teams behind us as those ahead.

When we have slipped up recently, every other team has won too. Double whammy.. us fluffing our lines and everyone else winning.

West Brom weekend I think it was only us in the top 7 that dropped points.

This midweek, we were the only team in the top 6 not to win and to slip up.

Crucial, and damaging. I’ve said to a lot of people Tuesday wasn’t a point gained it was points dropped and last night has shown that even more.

Correct. Unfortunately Sheffield United have got Wigan, Cardiff and Bristol City at home, and Huddersfield and Birmingham away coming up. Five pretty easy wins. They could lose their other four (unlikely) and still be on 85 points.

100%.

Also, sadly after both times that we failed to close from four to one point on Sheffield United, they immediately ground out an ugly win against their oppo. (Clearly our opponents were tougher in both those scenarios, but they got the job done).

Finishing 2nd is now going to be a big ask. Even if we win all of our remaining games, the most points we can get is 91.

Bournemouth had 88 points when they finished 2nd last season, and Watford finished on 91 the season before.
