Sunderland furlough 1st team squad

So what they mean is that the taxpayer is paying 80% of their players' wages and the club is paying the difference, as they will be contractually obliged to do. Hardly one of the smaller clubs in that division and still in receipt of Premier League parachute payments.

EDIT - probably not 80%, thinking about it, as it wil be limited to £2,500 per month.

Yes, I realised that just after I'd finished typing, hence the edit. Doesn't detract from the point though - you wouldn't really expect them to be one of the first clubs in League One to have to do this.

Still, I'm sure they'll do the decent thing and repay HMRC once the loyalty payment from the Premier League comes through.

I don't know why every club hasn't, at the very least with those players out of contract in the summer &/or those it wants off its books.

How can they do this as surely this is akin to What happened to us in 86 they can’t pay their debts.

Players are PAYE. They offset tax by other means. When I did high income tax returns for HMRC I seen 1 premier league player make 5 million vis PAYE but was self employed as a forrester in Ghana making £500,000 to offset against the PAYE tax
