Sunderland fan flying via Spain for Play-off Final

It's cheaper to fly to Spain, stay the night and then fly to Stansted than getting a train or a flight from Newcastle to London. Kind of shows how ridiculous our train prices are, but on the flip side, as people on Twitter are saying, it sounds like a good way to get yourself some 15 minutes of fame. Why couldn't he have got a Megabus or a lift with the people picking him up in Stansted (yeah, maybe they don't live in the NE)?

Great name, BTW.

It's not comparing like with like is it because he's getting a lift back. If he paid for return travel from Stanstead (😉) to Wembley and then went back to Sunderland the same way (assuming he could find the same prices) he wouldn't be far from the return fare he quoted from Newcastle.

Some of our train fares are ridiculous. I recently had to travel to London and needed an open ticket for flexibility, it cost me (or rather the business) nearly £350 Darlo to KX. I didn't want to wait to travel back after 7:00pm. I looked at flying Teesside to Heathrow but I would have ended up sitting around Heathrow for hours once I'd finished the job. And that flight has gone now too!

I remember my son breaking a journey in similar fashion flew to Spain spent a few days there and flew on to London cheaper than the train to London. What chance the climate...

When we went to Bristol city pre pandemic it was a lot cheaper to fly and stay over in a hotel than get a return train.
(And much more enjoyable)

I know people don't like to "jinx" things, but if he'd planned ahead and booked when the dates were announced, rather than waiting to see if they got there, it wouldn't have cost that much.

I think it's a load of hassle for this flight but I have split flights up before.

Went to Bilbao the other year with Eurowings via Stuttgart (only on the way there).

Was great as I went through immigration at Stuttgart so no checks at Bilbao. The other lads who went had 60 + minutes waiting at Bilbao.

That's one of the problems with operating the ticketing model that they do. That will be an empty seat going to London that someone else could have used. But the company don't mind because they got some money for it.

Don't forget they are happy for people to stand on full trains for the whole journey so one of them will be lucky enough to get a seat.
