Sunak's windfall tax and grants

No it would not bother me if my child was getting fed and not going hungry. I would do anything and go hungry for my kids. Let’s not give vouchers then give people a debit card. I do not remember saying you can not buy alcohol but to be honest if I had very little to spend alcohol would not be on my shopping list as well as cigarettes as I could use that money for better things
We already have a national voucher scheme to enable people to buy things...it's called money.

It's wrong that it wasn't means tested like with furlong money. Not every house hold in Britain will require £400 quid should be given to those in need or the working poor.
Furlough wasn't means tested. It was paid to employers so they could pay their wage bills.

Means testing is very hard to do, involves lots of stuff behind the scenes (software) and would take a long time to implement = expensive.

A different measure might have been somehow to pay it through the tax system and exclude the people on the higher rate? But I'd imagine that would be complicated to do also...

I bet it doesn't cost much more to give it to everyone as it costs to means text every payment. I could well be wrong though but I would have thought that would be one of Sunak's considerations. And if it was it looks better to give it to everyone (or is that me being cynical?)

1finny, same experience regarding Free School Meals. School had different coloured cards for those whose parents paid and those that couldn’t. You also had timed meals for each school year and the FSM kids were served last!!! Cruel and embarrassing treatment that I refused to accept, so I instead hung round the shops and shared half a packet of cheap biscuits with my brother. Better than being humiliated. Actually, there were several other kids who did the same and we got to know the toughest lad in the area, everyone was pretty scared of him but he was actually a great lad and our mates were always impressed that we knew him 😀.

Not everyone has been raped but most people I come into contact with who some on here would describe as lazy and needing to get a job have some kind of issue preventing this, be it an invisible disability or some kind of educational / mental health problem. Unless you are delving into these peoples medical / social histories (like I have to) you would never know.

What is staggering is how many people who work full time need food banks etc. I see that all day every day at work. It blows your mind and makes you think what kind of country do we actually live in.
What gets to me is that we have got used to automatically putting a few items for the foodbank into the trolley when we're at the supermarket.

To be fair to Rishi though, it must cost a fortune to heat 3 different houses.

And the others abroad. I’m sure I read that he has about a dozen properties and is worth £700 (seven hundred) million odd?
Good job he’s running the show financially, as he can definitely relate to how the overwhelming majority of this country live….

Surely the government could use the money to build a nuclear power station and provide subsidised energy.

Its crazy that foreign countries come here and build them to sell energy to the british people.

I too was a free school meals kid, but in my opinion we had a great system. First lesson on a Monday the kids were called to the front of the classroom and gave the teacher their dinner money and in return received 5 'cloakroom type tickets'. When I went up the only difference was I didn't pass over any money. The tickets were then exchanged with the dinner nanny to access the dinner hall so no one knew who was FSM and who wasn't. Granted, this was many years ago.
