SUNAK to move Treasury to Teesside ?

The Chancellor will announce in his March budget that a significant number of the Treasury's 1500 posts will be transferred to an "economic decision-making campus" in the North.

The Tees Valley is favourite after SUNAK took 9 Officials to Teesside last month for a Treasury board meeting. He has already set up the South Tees Development Corporation to develop a site near Redcar.

No that was the mod, and that never happened either after all those moving refused to relocate to the north east.

I thought it was a case of Thatcher refusing to allow jobs for the south to be moved North.

The house where centre square is now were purchased and demolished but the plug was pulled overnight.

Central gardens was all street houses and was demolished in 1977-79 ready for a procurement government department, the whole area was cleared and ready for building works to start when Thatcher was elected, her first sign off on government business was to cancel the move, meaning Middlesbrough had a huge area empty just sitting there. The lake and centre gardens was done as a temp measure till something was agreed for the long term use of the land.

This might be a different thing as I’m talking about the proposed mod move in the mid 90’s. To eaglescliff

I think the mod staff were going to move into the old spd site, as this was on top of that.
whitehall Jobs moving north but never happened.

This may be different this time. Cummings and his mob may see this as an opportunity to get rid of some of the Treasury mandarins who won’t want to move themselves and their families north. Then slot in some friendly SPADs - all part of the plan.

1500 office workers, be interesting to see them build offices that big tbh.
Id only give them 3 parking spaces, mind you buying land up near by for parking purposes would be a good venture.

Surely we have that much office space in the North already? I'll believe this when I see it but as I said on another thread any jobs coming to the North East is a bonus

There are people who were originally From the North of the country who would jump at the chance of being able to get decent accommodation rather than paying most of their often substantial salary to live in a shoe box in overcrowded London.

The Tory MP for Stockton South in the 80's (Michael Fallon?) promised good quality MOD jobs for Thornaby. We got Mr Chris's Cakes, paid for by the local tax payers instead. Once Mr Chris got his money he ran to off Cyprus with it and left the factory high and dry.
