The "big" day has finally arrived>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

🏆
This time the deckchairs are taking on the "Chairboys" for promotion back to the Championship.

This is the mackem`s fourth consecutive season in the third tier of English Football!
The once "Bank of England" club - up untill the late 50`s - has become a lumbering "big club", yo-yoing between the top tier, the Championship and now - the equivalent of League Division Three.

After "Big Sam" left to take up the England job, David Moyes presided over a disasterous season with eventual relegation in 2017.
A season later they had dropped like a stone into Division Three.
George Ezra, Drake and Ed Sheeran were amongst the top selling singles in 2018 and Boris wasnt yet Prime Minster.

Rapid changes of Management, inconsistency, over-paid average players and uncertainty over ownership - have all contributed to their demise.
Last season they were matched by a resurgent Lincoln City in the play-off semi-finals. They lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Jordan Pickford, Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore must be pleased they departed the sinking ship, [the latter two] to join a steady, promotion - seeking club down the A19.

🏆
So its now the Mackems "big day out" - some have already managed to hitch it to London, doing what Boro fans have done on several occasions over the years - paddling in the fountain in Trafalgar Square and sinking a few cups of "pop".
They have been made clear favourites, which suits Gareth Ainsworth and his battalion of players.

Underneath the media radar - Wycombe have regrouped following last seasons relegation and fought their way to the play-off final.
The "Chairboys" 23,000 fans, wont be surprised at beating the deckchairs.
The pressure is certainly on the Mackems.

Sunderland vs Wycombe Wanderers
Saturday 21st May 2022 (k.o. 3pm)
Wembley Stadium
Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off Final
Referee: Simon Hooper

We're the famous Wycombe Wanderers and we're going to Wembley... this time backed by more than 23,000 fans who will be giving everything to help their side return to the Championship.

Chairboys supporters were cheering from their sofas when Gareth Ainsworth's men overcame Oxford under the arch two years ago but this time they'll be in person, loud and proud, for an intriguing battle against a Sunderland side that defeated Sheffield Wednesday over two legs to reach the final.

Both clubs' form guide over the final two months of the season was virtually identical, both going undefeated since February, and the thrilling 3-3 draw between the sides at Adams Park in January demonstrated just how well-matched the two teams are.

Wycombe demonstrated their attacking prowess and defensive resolve in equal measure in their 2-1 aggregate triumph over MK Dons in the semis, and now another famous day in their history awaits on their third visit to Wembley in eight years.

["...third visit to Wembley in eight years"!]

A victory for Wycombe will surely see another exit of players from the Stadium of ****.

I clearly want Wycombe to win. The sight of 40 odd thousand crying Sunderland fans.

Yet purley for away days and traveling fans at the Riverside you'd say Sunderland is 'better'. I'm still fully Wycombe but it's a small consolation if Sunderland win. They will at least bring an away following to the Riverside and local for away game.

Sunderland to lose and Leeds relegated. If Carlsberg did weekends 😂

Key Players:

Sunderland`s top scorer is Ross Stewart with 25 goals - having played 52 games.
Hes one of only two players to reach double figures for the season.

Nathan Broadhead has notched up 12 goals in 25 games for the season.
The 24 year old is currently on loan from Everton.

Sam Vokes [17] and Gareth McCleary [11] are Wycombe`s top scorers,
but Gareth Ainsworth relies on his players to score from all positions.

Ex FMTTM pin-up, Lewis Wing, has scored two goals in 14 appearances this season.

This is probably the most "far-out" copy I ever found about a game!:)

Buckinghamshire Council backs Wycombe Wanderers in their promotion bid

Buckinghamshire Council is backing local football team Wycombe Wanderers in their bid to be promoted back into the EFL Championship.

Wycombe Wanderers will take on Sunderland AFC in the League One Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 21 May. More than 22,000 Wycombe Wanderers fans have already snapped up tickets for the big match.

In support of the team’s promotion bid, Buckinghamshire Council is flying a Wycombe Wanderers flag for the next few days at their High Wycombe office.

Councillor Dev Dhillon, Chairman of Buckinghamshire Council, attended the raising of the flag and said:

“It’s fantastic to see Wycombe Wanderers in the League One Play-Off final, and I know that everyone at Buckinghamshire Council is keeping their fingers crossed that the team win the match and secure promotion to the EFL Championship.

“We wish the Chairboys the best of luck for the game!”

[I wonder if there`s a local election coming up?!!]

I had to pass by close to Trafalgar Square last night and the crowd of Sunderland fans was growing. I have to compliment them on not being paralytic or aggressive and even laughing when I told a couple of them their striped kit came from South Bank, not some imagined link to Europe.

Fully expecting Sunderland to win, but then I did the last two times too.

If they do, it's still funny that it took them 4 seasons to get promoted with comfortably the biggest budget in the league for most of it.

If they don't, the fun continues and Wycombe get justice.

I'm sure I'll be supporting Wycombe once the game starts, but if we get games against Sunderland and Leeds next season it'll add a couple of big games with big crowds. Somewhat more excited than a Tuesday night Vs Wycombe

This morning local radio had some audio of the Mackems gathering and chanting in Trafalgar Square last night. Got me thinking, when did this tradition start, who started it and which clubs do it? Is it just a northern club thing?

Boro have done it the night before the game every time we've been down to Wembley to my recollection.

Not too bothered about the result today, although selfishly speaking I think Sunderland are more likely to challenge than Wycombe at the top end of the championship.
