Sultanas in curry

Fruit in curry can be good and is quite legit.

But use a recipy, don’t just chuck fruit in at random.

My wife’s father, was the wonderfully named Hilton Gonsalves (goan Portuguese), so she knew a thing or two about curry, but school curries on Humber side ruined the idea of fruit in her curry

That is correct. This is a picture of a fruit and nut curry from one of my recipe books.

Safe to say I have never made it. There is also a pineapple and a melon curry.

I always hated the sultanas. Just not something that tastes nice warm. Glad they've been phased out. Probably cos of the preponderance of Bangladeshi take aways that don't use them and probably cos they taste horrible.

I think British people probably started putting them in curries cos it seemed weird to us as we rarely put fruit in a savory casserole. Like how the first pasta everyone had was spaghetti, just because it was kind of novel to eat. Even though most Indian curries would not contain sultanas and Italians wouldn't eat spag bol.

One of the Indians near me puts sultanas in a couple of the curry’s they do, thankfully it says in the menu so I know to avoid them.

Funnily enough, I mentioned this to my wife only last week. She makes a cracking curry but never adds sultanas, like I had in my youth. When I suggested it to her she looked at me like I'd crapped on the carpet...... and I hadn't, honestly.

I've made the Curry pie as I was never a big fan of Curry but I enjoyed it in a pie when I went through a cooking phase. I think if someone threw an overcoat in a pie I would enjoy it.

Anyway I have used this Geordie guys recipe and he is pretty good IMHO.

Fruit in curry is pretty common. One of my favourite things to make is a South-African curry called Bobootie which is made (ideally) with lamb or mutton curry adding sultanas, dried apricots and flaked almonds and baked with beaten egg on top.
