Sub forums

Have to say I wouldn’t like having any sub-forums at all. The consensus was to keep it as close to the old board as possible and one of the best things about it is the mix of different topics in one place.

I fully agree on the no sub forums bit but wish we could have the discipline to just keep to one thread on a topic and not have thirty threads running at once where arguments get repeated ad finitum. In that respect one match thread is a prime example. Or is that a change too far as well?

One of the criticisms about the last forum was political posts taking up huge amounts of the board due to not having sub forums.

This could be our first 'ageist' thread - do we ban people for that
I'm old and can still work out which threads I want to click on or not

I don’t think that was a great many people though. It’s always been that way for as long as I’ve used the board. One of its great strengths is the mix of subject matter accessible in one place.

Again I wouldn’t restrict it. I don’t see why you’d want to really.

Just my opinion but I agree with Cardiff - there are too many threads saying exactly the same thing and if you wanted a debate on a topic which would involve everyone having a say surely one thread helps? I get that the sheer randomness of posts gives the board a uniqueness that is held dearly but sometimes you make a point on one thread only for another thread to start up the debate all over again.

I suggest that we may need some form of sticky posts at the top in some way. The list of topics being managed by admin. Some example topics include: suggested improvements, searching old forum etc.

With these modern forums in these circumstances admin can simply merge threads if they wanted to.

Just looking at the music thread. If that was the sole place for music you would soon end up having to scroll through hundreds of songs. Especially the way Erimus has been posting lately. May as well just go straight to YouTube. At least if it was a separate thread for example to introduce a new band you can see it straight away. If it is of no interest to you just ignore the thread.

Ok I'll say it again, if this forum only appeals to the more elderly crowd it will die.

But then you will still have your other sub forums to fall back on Primus84.;)

The old board went long enough without sub forums and I am sure this one will as well should the Administrators go that route.

Good point re the music thread asredastheycome, and Cardiff raises a fair point re repetitive posts, but that will also happen in sub-forums. It even happens within a single thread when people don't read the previous posts.

But as this site takes you to recent posts, you wouldn't have to scroll through hundreds. Plus, on a thread like the "music" thread, there's a ready archive of stuff to explore in dull moments.
