Sub forums

I like it as it is. On the first page, there are plenty of topics I’m not too fussed about but I manage to negotiate to the things I find interesting just fine. Occasionally I dip my toe in something different and regularly learn something new, which I think is a real plus of this forum. Advice about anything and everything can be gained from a broad church of users. A lot of good stuff that may help people who don’t even know they need the help, would no doubt get wasted or lost in sub forums. Stuff like energy bills advice, mortgages, cars, travel etc that I casually look at while clicking on topics in between the footy, politics etc, and learn from, I’d miss in sub forums that I’d probably not visit.

This is more than just a footi forum.
I think when we have colleagues posting about mental health issues, financial problems and the like, we should be able to respond and support them.
If posters want to talk about trains, local history, other issues about T-side, new music, favourite bands, the good old days, brown sauce or red sauce, did Terry Scott drive off the transporter, can you get an 8-dart finish and describing the colour of their watch - they should be allowed to do so.
Political and current afairs threads appear when things like the budget crops up - because it effects everybody: it effects the money people have to watch the Boro and usually leads to a discussion about walk-up prices and the like.
If the subject of homophobia, racism, sexism, etc in football is raised - it often leads to interesting debate.
Are the issues above to be arbitrarily placed in sub-forums if they stray off topic?
My view is that - Borolad and Rob will delete posts and posters who breach the rules and occasionally point out when any of us are sailing close to the wind.
If people dont want to talk anything else than football - my own advice is dont click on the topic.
If you find a football post has become one say - talking about Saudia Arabian tyrants backing football clubs - you can always click out.
Everything in life, just like this board, is interconnected.
Thats what makes this board always interesting(y)

Plenty of forums do well with subforums, but I do remember one particular forum I was a poster on dying a death and I can’t help but think that by plopping in a load of subforums it lead to people not bothering with certain ones until eventually it got quieter and quieter, I recently had a look for the first time in years and it’s a ghost town.

Like has been said more eloquently by roofie and others, some threads cover multiple topics and some posters would miss threads they would normally have contributed to, so I wouldn’t be a big fan of subforums myself.

The only way that I could see subforums being a benefit here is in the event of this place gaining a mass of new users with almost constant posting that leads to threads dropping down the board too quickly, so subs would ‘calm’ the main forum a wee bit.

I personally think it's not busy enough here for a load of them, but a politics one would be fine because a lot of them do pop up. Lot of people clearly don't like like the brexit m/politics threads and if you balance up with a few posters missing the odd off tangent discussion against people leaving the forum, which happens a lot, it's fairly easy imo.

This place doesn't get a lot of new (genuine) posters but plenty leave

Maybe the threads could be colour highlighted or some other technique to show/remind posters its a football thread or politics thread or general life thread or history thread or music thread, but still keeping everything on one board.

What I find satisfying on here is that posters in general want to talk and some even want to exchange their thoughts and information they know on a wide range of topics. Its like walking into a pub and finding most of the people are like your self and want to have some craic. OK politically there is a wide spectrum and a small number of posters appear to enjoy issuing insults and inflaming debates, but 90% of posters can hold differing views without resorting to insults etc.
