Student loans

Well I was lucky enough back in the 70s to receive a full student grant of 2200 and no tuition fees. So it was effectively free. Under Thatcher and Callaghan. And which political party brought in fees. ?
I don't disagree that Labour started this. However Labour want to end this also. The tories have no such intention and happily screw over the poor at the alter of capitatalism.

Your arguments about free are semantics unless, of course, you object to paying through taxation? And that would be hypocrisy of the highest order, wouldn't it?

As with all successful socialist policies, nobody could reasonably entertain abolishing it. The question is only the extent to which support is offered. For example, the argument could be made for primary and secondary education to be funded by student loans too, but that would expose how stupid it is to expect people to pay for their education instead of passing the cost on to the businesses and society that benefit most from an educated population. If you acknowledge that there is an overall benefit to society paying for education to secondary or college level through taxation, why would you not agree that free access to degree level education could be just as beneficial?
