Stuani

The decision making at the club has been poor for a long time. Apart from the appointment of warnock shame lack of support.

He was employed too high up the pitch, Grant and Leads legs had gone, he needed to sit and break those waves deeper, if Gaston hadn't had a strop maybe things would have been different. Glad that lad ended up a squad player at Sampdoria and got dropped from Uruguay squad.

I agree with this, the pace of the prem absolutely caught us out that season, meaning we had to play a 3 in midfield of which de roon was the legs.

We didn't have the wide men with the quality or consistency to play on the counter - don't think any of that was de roon's fault. He done his job as far as I was concerned that season.

Don't get me started on Gaston - absolute disgrace of a footballer.

I never quite get the frustration around the promotion year. It's about the team and the system worked pretty well - we got promoted.
I'm not sure if he would've thrived in the premier league, we needed more pace up top and creativity, which could theoretically have helped him.
We certainly could've done well with him and Bamford up front after relegation though. All the money we squandered on strikers could've just been used to improve the squad generally

I meant frustrating he was played out of position. But fair enough, we finished 2nd which is very hard as we know. Stuani would probably have done better individually if played as a striker, but maybe the team was better with him out wide. We'll never know, but it's also kind of a moot point because we achieved our goal.

Frustrating he never really got a chance in his best position though. Particularly given some of the cart horses we've had to tolerate since.

In general I'm a big fan of Karanka's Boro for those two seasons.

No doubt Negrado was a good player but he needed someone alongside to support him.
I remember one game he won a header, flicked it on and then had to chase after it himself !! There have been others over the years that have been signed with a good goal scoring record yet failed to provide for us. At one point it looked as if we were a graveyard for strikers. Hope our luck changes.

Karanka should have persevered with Ramirez playing as no10, rather than moving him out wide.

I seem to remember against Stoke there were real promising signs there that they could link up together. We drew 0-0 away at Arsenal with 3 central midfielders and Karanka decided to stick with 3 midfielders.

Looking back, the inclusion of Traore that day was the key reason for the good performance that day in my opinion, rather than the change in formation. We should have stuck with 4231 and had Traore out wide, Ramirez no10 and Clayton/De Roon as the sitters.

My thoughts exactly. De Roon could fill in as an 8 or 10, but he was a CDM. Traore just added a bit of pace, get the other team considering keeping their LB holding and not pushing forward. Ramirez was a very good 10 and a poor winger.

De Roon was wasted playing the box-to-box midfield role. People say we had to switch to 3 midfielders because we were being overrun in midfield but it was largely down to the fact we had Clayton and Forshaw as the two sitters up until that point. Forshaw wasn't a CDM. De Roon and Clayton as the two sitters would have worked. I always said Karanka clearly signed De Roon essentially as an upgrade on Leadbitter.

Yup said this before, we should have spent the 15mill Britt money, 7mill Fletcher money and 9mill Braithsnake money (31mill) on 2 or 3 high quality creative midfield players around 23 year old.

Imagine if we had bought James Maddison from Norwich that summer for 20mill and Benrahma from Nice for 6mill to join Traore as our third key creative player, we would have smashed that league and still had 5mill for squad players
Yeah we'd still have monk in charge though. He would have left traore bamford and Madison at home and played friend and that Brazilian lad whose name I've forgot as wingers in a 442.

Imagine if we could have kept Stuani, Negredo, Bamford and Braithwaite as our striking options, and although the two former are getting a bit long in the tooth now, they’re still streets ahead.

Which we could easily have done had we achieved safety in that first season back but sadly due to managerial and club errors we didn’t and financial pressures led to more bad decisions

Just my opinion but I look at it this way.
Sometimes you have a howler.
You miss an open goal or score an own goal.
It's embarrassing but you just have to get on with the rest of the game.
The club has dropped a few howlers.
It's embarrassing to waste all that money while losing such quality.
But I choose to remember the moment that trophy was lifted.
That night when Massimo scored that winner.
I dare you not to think about that without smiling.
Dont dwell on the embarrassing mistakes we can't change.
This season is better than last season so that's a step in the right direction.
Next season could be better again.
Let's just get on with the game.

True. Let's hope we can get the players the club so badly need. We have the right manager to steer us but has he got the backing?

That's all very well but there'll be fans in their 20s who've only seen two decent seasons and absolutely nothing else to remember with any fondness

awful season in the prem with kranka... playing for a nil-nil and hoping to sneak a winner in the last 10 mins.... just got worse and worse.... thought the keeper was shocking...

I still remember poor old George being skinned by Zaha at the Riverside.
