What’s your definition of what should be in a stocking?

I’m forever in a perpetual disagreement with the missus about what should be in a stocking.

Me Northerner from working class background - small, cheap bits with a few edibles, and things that pass the time over the festive period like small puzzle books / things you have to build. Our stockings as kids were designed to keep us busy in our rooms so my parents could sleep an extra 3-4 hours after my 4am wake up.

Her Middle Class Southerner- anything that’s small enough to fit in a stocking, I’m talking clothes, jewellery etc and the stocking is opened alongside the presents.

I look like a right tool when she’s pulling put an orange and and some after eights, whilst I’m pulling out one of the presents I wanted.

I just can’t get my head around it enough though to change.

We only do stockings for the 2 kids literally a few bits in to entertain them for a hour or so, so we can try and get a little more sleep. I'm married to a southerner as well but I have slowly got her round to my northern way that stockings are for small things

So there’s hope for me yet then!!

Satsumas and nuts

Like you though it has developed into an expensive load of other stuff over time.

And Col - I’d put your tights on instead today. A bit nippy for the nether regions

This has made me laugh bringing back some fond memories. First and foremost it’s a football sock not a stocking for maximum space. I used to be so upset if I had none clean, worrying that I may get less presents than my siblings. Do people still do it these days - I can’t think that people use their own socks anymore - surely it’s these store bought Christmas stockings?

we used to get an apple and an orange , some nuts maybe a bit of chocolate and a small game or pocket book.

I know some southerners like one of those huge stockings which literally they put all their presents in where possible.

Chocolates, sweets, a magazine, nail clippers, toothbrush, some little gadgets/toys, and a manky fruit.

That's always been what I got, and what I'll do myself.

Yes , as the OP said. Fun stuff. On a personal note I think it's nuts how much stuff kids get. I've two of my own and the misses, imv, gets them too much stuff that I don't agree with then.
Then she kicks off when I refuse to help to wrap it all

Terrys Choc orange, some choc coins, satsumas.. a few small toys: cars, felt tip pens, small book: knot types / facts / records etc, top trumps, maybe a small Airfix kit... type of things... ....sponge / soap / bubble bath (maybe they thought I needed a hint) & just for the kids..

Chocolate coins, used to love them as a kid plus the latest Shoot or Dandy book.

Bits and bobs. Little things along with some chocolate/jelly beans etc. Opened on the bed before going downstairs.

This thread got me thinking about pickled onions (its been a rough year)

Why are they a xmas thing?
I found myself buying a jar the other day. Very nice but can’t remember the relationship with xmas. Did one of the 3 wise men have them as a gift?

Not pickled onions, but I’ve just dug out piccalilli I made from a glut of veg in Aug 2019. Still tastes fine. Had a bit last night and we just had a picky lunch with cheese, ham and some terrine.

never eat it at any other time of year

It's actually quiet mad when I think back. I had Nuts / sweats /colouring book and fruit in my stocking back in the day😂

I also used to get £1 or one of my Grans and £5 off the other. Absolute madness of you look at what people get today. I'm not 'old old' but things have definitely moved on.

My mate has spent well over a grand on his 11 year old. He was asking me what the new iPhone was like. I thought it was for him but it was gonna be for her..... Madness🙄

Has there been a run on Terry's Chocolate Orange due to Brexit and the Covid pandemic? We couldn't get 2 anywhere for the stockings of my two little boys, ages 44 and 38.:(
