Stewy D on Undr The Cosh

Just re-checked that Sevilla team from the final, it really was class wasn't it?!

Navas and Alves on the right, Escude centre half, Maresca in the middle. Luis Fabiano, Adriano and Saviola going forward!

Didn't realise Juande Ramos was manager either

They were giving Barcelona and Real Madrid a run for their money that season and were probably as good as the very best teams in the PL. I don't think we did that badly, game just ran away from us when we were chasing it. 4-0 was very harsh.

Enjoyed that to be fair.

Interesting that he said he's almost certain Southgate didn't sign Mido, because he wasn't the type of character Southgate liked. Really makes you question just how much control did Southgate have over signings.

Also didn't realise Ince had a reputation for being a bully during his time here. I guess it must have been his way of trying to gain respect being the captain, but went about it the wrong way.

The fact that he liked being known as "The Guv'nor" explains a lot

Not only did he like to be called The Guv'nor, but didn't he famously invent his own nickname and then insist on others using it? Tells you quite a lot about his character.

It was a good listen, looking forward to part two.

It was interesting to see Stewy describe himself as a confidence player, which chimes with observations from others in football (Big Sam etc) and many fans as well. Makes it clear how harmful the actions of a number of Boro fans, who consistently got on his back towards the back end of his first spell and throughout most of his second spell probably were. Although I still maintain he was nowhere near as bad in his second stint at the club as some people make out.

Really enjoyed it, love the bit where he's discussing going to Liverpool or Arsenal and Jon Parkin says something like, similar to me expect I had the choice between Burton or Morecombe 😁

There is a danger that 'Southgate apologists' use the fact he didn't sign a number of players as his get out of jail free card, but personally I think it was a big mistake to sack him when we did.

He sustained PL football for two seasons as manager and it was only in his third season that it unravelled. I'm sure that some of that, at least, was due to the players that we signed.

I think time and history will prove we had one of the best managers of a generation and we let him go because of fan pressure from the Riverside generation.

The Jonny come latelys felt entitled to PL football and spat their dummies when it was taken away.

In my opinion an opportunity missed for a Boro legacy that could have lasted decades.

Ince was probably the only Boro player I've actually disliked during his time for us, as I saw him bullying the younger players on the pitch particularly when it was his fault and he'd misplaced a pass etc. Having said that I knew a mate of a mate of Robbie Stockdale and he apparently worshiped him, and thought that he was just trying to get the best out of those young players, so what do I know.

I think it was more the manner in which it was taken away, we barely put up a fight and seemed to resign ourselves to relegation long before the West Ham away game. I like Southgate, but dont forget he wasn't actually sacked when we went down, but because Gibbo didn't see him getting us promoted instead.

I don't think anyone would argue that the manner of our relegation was a disgrace. We might disagree with the underlying cause.

I believe absolutely, that we would have been promoted with Southgate. Maybe not in the first season but reasonably quickly. I also think that, under the current financial restrictions, a manager that knows how to develop young players would have been mighty valuable.

Agree, I thought we were doing OK in the Championship and was shocked when he was sacked, but there's only one man who has earned the right to make those calls and he did.

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say he will be known as one of the best managers of a generation, but I do agree that in hindsight we should have given him until the Christmas period at least.

If I'm honest, I was probably one of the fans calling for his head at the time. We can blame Gibson for the decision but there was a large section of the support who were calling for his head at the time, and he probably felt pressured into the decision.

A lot of fans were still bitter and blamed Southgate for taking us down, so that's what he was up against really. I think some fans were almost waiting for the opportunity to stick the knife in.

He did it because of fan pressure though which was the original point I was making.

Southgate will be the one that got away.

I agree with almost all of that. Except the best in a generation. I think there is a very big chance that Southgate brings home an international trophy.

Some would still say he had to do it at club level and maybe they are right. If a club, any club, gave him 5 years to build a football culture he would succeed anywhere. He really is that good.

I liked Southgate and thought we should have stuck with him. We lost the plot as a club the summer of 2008 and we were as a result. Gordon Strachan was without doubt the worse thing to happen to this club and we still haven’t recovered. Tony Mowbray apart our recruitment has been horrific, we were left wanting in the premier league, hung out to dry. Garry Monk was an absolute car crash, Tony Pulis again. Jonathan Woodgate had his hands tied and to pal him up with Robbie Keane was a joke. Neil Warnock has been class for us but rocking out of a transfer window with clear holes in our squad AGAIN he’s on a hiding to nothing. Hopefully he can come up with the magic formula otherwise we’ll be coming up short with another manager and another three year plan.

What a load of rubbish !

Warnock's been class for us, despite us hovering just above the relegation spots but Pulis got us into the playoffs and is written off as a car crash??

I expect Boris Johnson will be getting a bumbag and some signed pictures given how easy it appears to pull the wool over peoples eyes.

This makes zero sense.

Pulis got us into playoffs then close again following season after selling our 3 best players.

Warnock is a dinosaur and has done nothing

Tony Pulis picked up the same points as Garry Monk.. same. He also wasted a huge amount of money!

Bought Aden Flint for £7m and sold the next season for £4m bought George Saville for £8m the £1m loan fee for Jordan Hugill.

Got us into the playoffs? We'd just come down from the premier league and spent a fortune on players! He had the team playing some absolutely dreadful football and we picked up the points based on the quality players we had in the side.

Nothing to do with Boris Johnson btw totally irrelevant. I see we have two main issues, one being fitness.. failing to see out the second half and us picking up injuries and then we have lack of cover at the back. I don't see it being an issue with our manager. I do see him being on borrowed time mind..
