Stewy D on Undr The Cosh

Couldn't believe that about Dani Alves - talk about amateur hour. Hope that scout got the push.

Wonder if Mr. Pulis or Mr. Karanka will be on Pt.2.

Why did Middlesbrough get relegated? Poor recruitment. Mido was a carcrash and Alves couldn't come up with the goods. (pretty much)

Mido £6m
Steven Fletcher was recommended to Boro for £1m by Mark Proctor summer 2007 we turned our noses up and went instead for Mido

Alves £12m (which was more like £3.5m) January 2008
Ross McCormack was recommended to Boro for £300k by Mark Proctor

Letting James Morrison go for £1.5m and bringing in Jérémie Aliadière was a bit of a whoopsie imo.. although seeing Aliadiere and Tuncay up top for us was probably some of the best football I saw us play that season.

Downing was promised we would bring in a certain quality of player in the summer and it didn't happen.

Summer 2008

Mark Schwarzer for Charles Itandje - messed up the transfer (boro wanted him on loan) we stuck with Turnbull and Jones
Luke Young for Gretar Steinsson - baulked at the £4m transfer so spent £3.5m on Justin Hoyte
Lee Cattermole for Graham Dorrans - turned our noses up (Mark Proctor recommendation £100k) went for Didier Digard £4m
Fabio Rochenback for - Charlie Adam turned our noses up (Mark Proctor recommendation £500k) went for Marvin Emnes £3.2m

Would Dorrans and Adam have been up to the job.. would our players at the time

January 2009 We were preparing a £2.5m offer for Steven Fletcher based on the money we were due on the sale of Stewart Downing to Spurs £7m which the bank wouldn't let us spend on players including: Ben Watson £2m & Nemanja Matić £1m Charlie Adam £500k Charles Itandje £1m

We hadn't really replaced George Boateng and lacked that extra bit of steel of grit that the likes of James Morrison, Gretar Steinsson, Graham Dorrans, Charlie Adam would have brought to the team.

I agree with Downing that the players brought in were not Gareth Southgate's players.

Does this side get relegated 2009 in the premier league? That back four is ROCK HARD!

Matic could have been a legend here.

Haven't listened to it, but does it allude to us identifying Dani Alves as their weak link
Says that a scout identified that Alves was slow as shyt and Stewy should target him. Said after the first 5 minutes he was basically playing left back with Franck due to their right hand side of Alves and Navas bombing on.

In my head we've just signed him in the January.. back end. International clearance just gone through starts on the bench.

But you're right! Charlie Adam shouldn't be going straight into the side either!

Also.. we accept the £4.5m bid in for GON back to Portsmouth and we pick up a £4m Kevin Nolan from Bolton..

I remember that game against Accrington so vividly. Downing was the only competent player in a Boro shirt that day. The rest were outshone by their opponents from start to finish.
He saved Aitors blushes that day and when he scored AK just stood motionless in misery. The sarcastic post match comment was crass given that the rest of the team he picked that day were utter garbage throughout.

I've heard that in a Downing interview before, that he asked for a scouting report on their right back before the Sevilla game and McClaren's team basically said - don't worry, he's *****.

Dani Alves that season and the next two at Barca was one of the most electrifying players in Europe. He was like Neymar playing at right back. He went everywhere on the pitch and did everything!

I remember the Guardian's Spanish football correspondent naming him player of the season (over Messi) and thinking "Hmm, I've not seen much of this guy but we might have a problem here".

Just re-checked that Sevilla team from the final, it really was class wasn't it?!

Navas and Alves on the right, Escude centre half, Maresca in the middle. Luis Fabiano, Adriano and Saviola going forward!

Didn't realise Juande Ramos was manager either

Palop wasn't half bad in goal too. Kept them in it. That was their first UEFA cup, now 5 and counting.

The free kick and Viduka save spring to mind.

I was sat behind Rochemback's free kick and it moved all over the shop. Keeps did well to get something on it.
