Stewy D on Undr The Cosh

This makes zero sense.

Pulis got us into playoffs then close again following season after selling our 3 best players.

Warnock is a dinosaur and has done nothing
Pulis got us into playoffs by winning the exact same amount of points as Garry Monk.. he started Britt over Bamford and had sacked off Braithwaite (who we lost £5.5m on) and Villa dumped us out after scoring ONE GOAL

The next season we didn't make the playoffs! How is selling our 3 best players seen as some sort of achievement,, would another manager not managed to do this?

Patrick Bamford £7m
Jordan Hugil £1m - Net result Sold Patrick Bamford for £6m
BROKE EVEN ON BAMFORD

Ben Gibson £15m
Aden Flint £7m - lost £3m (£12m) replaced with Paddy McNair £5m
£7m profit

Martin Braithwaite £10m - Sold for £4.5m
£5.5m loss

Adam Forshaw £4.5m - George Saville £8m
£3.5m loss

Cyrus Christie
£0.5m Profit

£8.5 LOSS

NET £1.5m LOSS

Adama Traoré £18m

We ended up losing Britt Assombalonga and Rudy Gestede for naff all anyway.. surely it would have been better to sell them off for something and have Braithwaite in for the playoff final?

Bamford is still competing in the prem and worth considerably more than £6m, Braithwaite is playing for Barcelona after a £16m move, Forshaw is still in the prem, Christie has been pretty regular for Fulham the past two seasons with fulham including one in the prem. Traore was mentioned in the £30m-£50m bracket in the last window.

Tony Pulis was just a complete blagger an older Garry Monk rather than overpaying for players he under sold.

I think time and history will prove we had one of the best managers of a generation and we let him go because of fan pressure from the Riverside generation.

The Jonny come latelys felt entitled to PL football and spat their dummies when it was taken away.

In my opinion an opportunity missed for a Boro legacy that could have lasted decades.
:ROFLMAO:

I think Southgate's inexperience shines through from that period. I think he struggled with the transition from the leader of the dressing room to leading the dressing room as a manager and managing the group the mix of players that he inherited/signed.

I think he'd have probably managed upwards and downwards a lot more effectively, knowing what he knows now.

Downing made clear at the POTY awards in 2008 that he'd been made a lot of promises regarding where the club was supposed to be going and getting rid of the rest of our midfield was probably not part of that.

I always like to think that Southgate as a man would be up for accepting the players signed on his behalf in such a way, but again, maybe that's down to a lack of experience. I can't imagine most established managers accepting players they definitely didn't want. The story I'd heard re: Mido was that GS had been impressed when he played against him in his last season.

I liked Southgate and thought we should have stuck with him. We lost the plot as a club the summer of 2008 and we were as a result. Gordon Strachan was without doubt the worse thing to happen to this club and we still haven’t recovered. Tony Mowbray apart our recruitment has been horrific, we were left wanting in the premier league, hung out to dry. Garry Monk was an absolute car crash, Tony Pulis again. Jonathan Woodgate had his hands tied and to pal him up with Robbie Keane was a joke. Neil Warnock has been class for us but rocking out of a transfer window with clear holes in our squad AGAIN he’s on a hiding to nothing. Hopefully he can come up with the magic formula otherwise we’ll be coming up short with another manager and another three year plan.
Agree with most of that, aside from Warnock being class for us.

I do appreciate him coming in and keeping us up that season but we shouldn't overstate the job he did. It's not as if we were cut adrift from the other teams when he came in, and a great escape style job was required. I think most decent/experienced managers would have also kept us up.

We were only in that position in the first place because we had a manager who was completely out of his depth.

I'd agree with that. He got us playing to a lower mid-table level. It's not like we won 7 out of 9.

‘most decent/experienced managers would have also kept us up’ - easier said than done. who would we be talking about? we rolled the dice last season based on our finances and we came up short.. but we finished exactly vwhere we wanted to. last season was a success imo.

this season we’ve started with a blip.. injuries (like in previous seasons) to Dijksteel, Bola & what looks like Fry will naturally effect us.

Middlesborough Again.....

Just got onto the Karanka walkout part, Downing says we limped over the line, but we won 6 games on the bounce after he came back, and went unbeaten for the rest of the season. We lost 3 out of 4 before the walkout. Downing played the most games that season out of any outfield player. He was hardly booed for months either.

This is why I can't take everything Downing says for fact, he clearly has an agenda. Players like Leadbitter absolutely loved him, but Downing didn't have any respect for him clearly.

And when it comes to Pulis he says 'he fell out with other players but he was alright with me' ' I was his favourite'... bit hypocritical...

Listened to part 2 and not that we didn't already know this but Karanka is an absolute lunatic.

The infamous Karanka walk out came about because Karanka kept a note of every time a player had ***ed him off. He called a meeting and started reading out of it. An unnamed player called him out on it, asked him to read it out in full and Karanka marched out.

and some people want him back 🤪

We did limp over the line we went up on goal difference.

Downing said we were 10 points clear of Burnley (this was in January 2016) and we fell off a cliff with it all coming to a head before the Charlton game.

Unbeaten in 10 games, winning 6 on the bounce, is not limping over the line.

He was obviously a good manager tactically but didn’t have the man management skills to make it at the top. If we didn’t have Rhodes Nugent Downing and all those one doubts were AKs signings, he wouldn’t have got us up.

The fact he couldn’t keep the dressing room together even when we were clear at the top should tell something.

Wow - great listen that. I think we all knew Karaka was a bit of a, well, a Krank but the surprising bit for me was the way SD was treated by the club and specifically SG

Semantics i suppose depending on where your opinion lies but giving up a 10 point lead and making 2nd place on goal difference tells its own story.
To me limping over the line is giving up the point lead in the final run of games. Having that spell in February/March and then coming back from such a big fallout, galvanising the squad again and going on that run that got us promoted, is the opposite of limping.

The way we won those games vs Reading, Bolton etc didn't look like a team that had fell out with the manager. The battling draws with Burnley and Brighton, and how we should've won against Birmingham if not for the linesman. That didn't look like a dressing room that was so against the manager like Downing paints a picture of.

To say we limbed is a total lack of respect for how good Burnley and Brighton were. Boro had no right to finish above those two but did. This in a season where Brighton went something like 25 games unbeaten at one point. If you finish second after 46 games you deserve promotion.
