Or do we wait to create a haggard likeness of him after 20 consecutive years in the championship, having suffered Steve Bruce-ball, the returns or Curbishley and Allardyce and the Downing years?

Genuine question - why does it matter?
The club is there for the community and always will be in some way shape and form.
(even if it went bust it would be resurrected).

May not be able to compete at the highest level but some clubs can do it (albeit fewer and fewer these days)
