Steph McGovern and "no go zones" in Middlesbrough

Apologies for the link to the Daily Heil, but interesting what Steph McGovern had to say about the town and how people made assumptions about her because of where she came from and her accent.

One thing that got me wondering though, is this claim that her Mam and Dad lived in the middle of this "no go zone". Now ignoring that there's not really anywhere I would describe in that way, I'd always thought she was from a fairly middle class family and grew up in Nunthorpe or Acklam ?

Yes I can read really well, it was more a in house joke not a dig at your post. I know some lads who read this board, who live in Acklam. They always say how upper class acklam is, and it is the most desirable area in Middlesbrough.

Where are these no go areas in Boro?

Working as a bailiff in my early 20's I wouldn't say anywhere in Boro was a no go area.

My cousin was a bobby all his working life, always said during the 70s Victoria rd area was a place you should never go alone.
Never had any bother barring Groovy hill tried to rob tools from a van and that was something nor nothing, all places has its nutso idiots with drug people these days.

My mate said he was at a pub in Grove Hill the other day and a dealer casually strolled in and everyone openly bought coke off him in the middle of the pub, no effort to hide what they were doing, the staff knew what it was and allowed it too. Somewhere like that would be a 'no go area' for me.

Are there any pubs left in Grove Hill? Is the Halfpenny still open?

Certainly was similar in Easterside when I used to work that way. When the Grove was open they would openly do coke in the bar. The viking had a strict policy at the time to only do drugs in the toilet :) A few years ago mind.
