Steffen

The misplaced pass was just any old misplaced pass - it gave a clear shot at goal for Sunderland, that they had a 50/50 chance of scoring from. If you misplace a pass , mis place it out of play or knock it too far upfield. Against Millwall he kicked the ball against a Millwall player and the ball came back and missed the post by only 2 feet. At times he feels like a keeper trying to be a midfielder.

He’s just not good enough, he’s been told to play out from the back which I get when we’re against a team sitting deep and he becomes an “extra man” to help us build attacks.

But decent teams are onto him, as soon as he receives the ball it’s a trigger for opposition attackers to press him aggressively as they know he has a mistake in him.

He gifted them a 1v1, was lucky his spill of a simple save was to an offside player and he let Fry down by not coming out for the ball over the top.

I’m starting to agree that he needs replacing. He’d terrify me in an important game such as a play-off semi final or final.

Which games would you say he’s won us points in
One that sticks out is the 1-0 win over Birmingham when he was motm. Another is the 2-1 win over Norwich just before the wc break, to name a few.

Keepers are always treading a fine line. Their errors often lead to goals conceded, whereas if a striker misses a sitter or a defender misses a tackle it's not as likely to affect the final result. Nowadays with keepers expected to be comfortable with the ball at feet they're playing a high risk game. The days of solid keepers who do the basics right and not much else are becoming rare. You have to be able to contribute in other ways and all the top clubs have keepers that are comfortable in possession, despite their propensity to make mistakes.

He is a solid keeper and has won us points on occasions but I expected far more from him, I expect he will be our highest paid player as well and he isn’t justifying that for me

I think long term Brynn will be our keeper but it’s a huge step up for a young keeper next year. I think he might have a year in league one
My concern with Brynn is he is only 6ft which is very small for a modern day keeper he would have to be exceptionally good

It's always the way that people try to pin the blame on certain players after a defeat.

A big part of the way we play is possession based and he is comfortable being part of that, but this will always lead to mistakes.

Even the best at it make mistakes, Edison for example and even yesterday Sarr made a bigger mistake than Steffen's.

He's been infinitely better that what we had last season and yesterday I thought his performance was mixed - there was some good stuff and some not so good stuff.

Whether he's here next season remains to be seen, but he certainly not a weak link in this team.

Steffens starting position for the Red card Incident isn't aggressive enough. He should have been on the edge of his box and he could have easily came and cleared it. Totally different game if he does that.

I have ZERO issue with his playing out from the back and occasionally getting it wrong. Ederson is the best goal keeper in the world at doing it and he gets it wrong every now and again. You'd concede far more smashing it up the pitch and failing to win the headers with a team not set up to play like that.

My main issue with him is he doesn't make many of those really important, massive saves that win you points. He is decent at block type saves, due to his frame, but anything down low where he has to get down quickly and stretch he is very poor. He also has a near post weakness

He doesn’t inspire confidence to the rest of his defenders when he is apt to come up with an unforced blunder.
Certainly Carrick is aware of this and will not pursue an interest in him after this season.
Boro will not be badly served by looking to the keeper usually on the bench and the loanee now performing in the lower divisions .

This is what I am talking about his lack of tactical awareness. He should have known he had to be alert and out quicker given they way Stewart and Sunderland set out.

Completely agree.

They'd been caught offside at least 4 times first half with balls over the top. Was very much a tacitc of theirs to try and isolate Fry and his lack of pace 1 on 1 and also balls into the space vacated by Giles to hit us in that channel. He had to have been aware of that and switched on to his role to prevent it

He is touted as a sweeper keeper - he is not.
A sweeper keeper would have snuffed that danger out for Fry.

He is a dicky dancing poser who thinks he should dictate all our play from his penalty box.
He mis passes far too often. It is not rare.

We’ve got a keeper who’s done very little wrong on the bench. I can only imagine Steffen has it in his loan contract that if he’s fit, he plays. If he doesn’t, I don’t get why we’re playing a very shaky keeper to City’s benefit over our own.
same keeper that sunderland kids put 5 past?
