Steffen Comments

It’s mad how many goalkeepers we’ve had deemed ‘not good enough’ by supporters. In my lifetime, only Pears, Schwarzer, Given and Randolph have been considered ‘good enough’ to be our No1. But Pears and Schwarzer were both still heavily criticised - both for their kicking more than anything else.

Maybe this is just what goalkeepers are. Every single one will make a mistake, drop a cross, give the ball away, be beaten at his near post, fumble one into the bottom corner. The ones who make the fewest errors play for the biggest, wealthiest clubs already. Some are obviously much better than others but Steffen is a perfectly good goalkeeper for Boro. In fact he’s a very good goalkeeper for us.

I might get pelters for this but I think the merits of goalkeeping is probably the most ill-informed discussion in football. Even more than officiating. It’s a specialist position and there are so few goalkeepers employed by the media to talk specifically about it. There was an interview with Buffon a few years back where he said the discourse around goalkeeping was and is just completely laughable. And I’d be inclined to agree.

Zack Steffen? I’d sign him to tomorrow if it was up to me. He’s been very good for us across the piece.
Asuuming we go up and i think we will Hes very inexperienced at premier level it would be a huge irresponsible gamble to pay such high wages for someone with so little experience. I honestly think he would be targeted at premier league level its a massive jump in class. we could end up with a Victor valdez situation where we are paying someone a fortune whos not upto the standard. Better buying a solid experienced keeper from another premier league side.

which experienced premier league keeper would you visualise us signing?

I think people have massively inflated opinions about goalkeepers. Did take Steffen a long time to come to terms with the Championship but I think he's now as good as any keeper in the league. I saw someone describe him as an "attacking" keeper and I think that's about right. Wilder bought him as a sweeper-keeper so he could play a high defensive line. Carrick has lowered the defensive line but Steffen still spends a long time high up, trying to help the team beat the opponent's press. From what I have seen, he is by far the best in the league at doing that.
An average shot-stopper and above average on 1 v 1's. Getting much better at claiming crosses but still prone to misjudgements.
Without going through some kind of FM database, I doubt there's a keeper out there who is better at playing the role we ask Steffen to play who is realistically available to us.
Whether we can do a deal with him and Man City is hard to say. There are probably Prem teams who are willing to offer him 30K a week to be the back-up keeper. I don't know that there are any Prem teams in the bottom half who are looking to upgrade their keeper. Might be some teams in Germany. If we get promoted I can see us offering him £40K a week if City accept a small transfer fee. If City want him off their books they might take a small upfront fee with a sell-on clause.
Personally, he seems good enough for now. If we can get promoted and stay in the Premier league, I could see us looking to upgrade him after 2-3 years but for now he would offer continuity and probably save us more points than he costs us. You also have to work on the basis that our coaching team can improve him as he plays regularly. He has definitely improved, especially in the last couple of months, so there's every reason he still has plenty of room to improve.

Any signing will have to fall into a wage structure. Judging by the interview Zack is (rightfully) prioritising playing and whether a club is a good "fit" over earning. I am not sure about the £80k figure but his Man City move has been lucrative for him. These lads, for the most part, want to play and be active within the group. He is good in the Champ and has grown a lot as the season has progressed. I would have him but it would have to fit our financial structure. This is how football finance is going outside the top 10 in the Prem. So even if we do get promoted we are not and should not compromise on the wage structure.

We will not be paying £80k a week for a keeper even if promoted, possibly around £45k

In the Championship more like £25k/week.

Steffan is a curate's egg to me - some very good bits, but other bits not up to high standard yet..

Very good bits - some excellent reflex saves, passing, speed of reactions

Bits to improve - judging crosses, catching, learning to make the ball stick more/judge push ball away

When England were under the cosh a bit last night and playing it around but backwards, I was surprised how basic Pickford's play was. There were times there were passes on but he just put his foot through it and gave Italy the ball.

I think Steffen's definitely got valuable qualities.

Fits our style of play perfectly, he's almost more than a keeper to us so therefore very important to the team.
Doing a good job for us.
