Steffen….behave yourselves.

You'd think he's not beyond being dropped if he makes more errors.

You always wonder with big 'name' loan signings. Do they have to play? Will we simply stick with them due to large wages being paid?

We've had loan signings in the past who continued to get game time despite being worse or no better than we had.

I can't for the life of me workout why Connally played so many mins at the expense of Coburn and Watmore.

It is in the nature of some fans to knee jerk on one performance. He’s earned a bad game every now and again. All keepers have them, even the best. Remember Schwarzer’s howlers?

Ridiculous to criticise him for passing it out from the back. He's doing it because he'll have been told to do it.

If Carrick wanted him to clear his lines because of the press, that's exactly what he'd have done.

Do people really think the coach leaves it up the keeper to decide?

It's how Carrick wants to play. If Steffan isn't here next year I'm pretty sure his replacement will do exactly the same. People are going to have to get used it.

They are not jumping on them, they are giving an assessment of the performance.

Akpom has been excellent, his penalty was tosh. We are allowed to say that but you’re saying we should shut up because he’s been excellent. Or that because we say he didn’t do well with the penalty were jumping all over it.

Im not having that at all. You’re contradicting yourself by saying you can criticise but you can’t these two because you think they’ve been excellent (akpom definitely, question marks about if Steffan has put many performances that have been 8 or above in)
Steffen has been mostly excellent since carrick arrived.

Are we allowed to disagree?
Akpom actually played pretty well yesterday, holding the ball well and drawing lots of free kicks. He was also really unlucky that the ball hit the bar for the penalty. But he missed the spot kick badly.
Steffen is a totally different case, he was a continual problem all match and let 3 bad goals in. One summing his inability to save shots he should throw his cap on, one showing his inability to deal with crosses in his six yard box and one showing his inability to command at set pieces.
His holding on to the ball and ridiculous passing to defenders under pressure was the main reason they penned us in for the entire first half. They definitely targeted him.
He is a problem, not someone who should be gobbling up so much of the budget, or someone we should be looking to sign permanently.

Schwarzer got stick, as did Pears and Platt. It is a joke to compare Steffen to them.

Nonsense.

First goal Giles allows Benson to cut in onto his favoured left, shot dips in front of Steffen who is very close to saving it but it is right in the corner.

Second goal is a cross which goes in at the far post, I've seen far better keepers than Steffen beaten in that way.

Third goal is on Johnny Howson no one else.

The passing it out is by design and the first time we have seen such an aggressive and effective press used by the opposition if anyone is to blame for persisting with that it is the coaching team.

I’ve got no problem with him doing it. He’s just not doing it very well.

My main issue with him is the basic goalkeeping errors, and he just doesn’t seem to make many great saves.

It is not "nonsense" Muttley - but delighted to get your absolute verdict from your arm chair in Darlo.
He was dire yesterday. The reaction of everyone actually there was clear and virtually unanimous.

And wrong. Watched the game on stream so had the benefit of replays and the only goal that had any element of blame for Steffen was the first one and the primary "blame" if we must point a finger was Giles for letting Benson cut inside and shoot.

Typical.
Do you not think those there will now have watched the replays and listened to the post match remarks?
He should have thrown his cap on the first and the second was just a joke that he allowed it in.
That Giles was defensively poor for both goals is also true - he had a shocker - but your goalkeeper should routinely deal with both efforts on goal.

His fannying around was constant. He caused the team far more bother than the opposition did.

I would hope and may have changed their minds?

"Thrown his cap on the first" is guff that was a well hit shot that dipped in front of Steffen and went in right in the corner. I get that any keeper is disappointed to be beaten at the near post but the defending that led to it was rank poor from Giles and Lenihan. Second is very difficult for any keeper a cross that is being attacked by a striker that then goes in off the far post. Difficult to see what he could do differently. Both are a long way from "routine" saves.

I don’t understand why Roberts was dropped he had a great spell whilst Steffen was not playing.
He’s our keeper and as such should be our first choice. I’d put him in against Steffen every time.

Had grave doubts about Steffen at first but I think he's a decent shot stopper and quite handy in one on ones. I think his handling in the air has improved whilst he's been here.
When Roberts deputised I thought he looked good especially in terms of commanding his box. But for those levelling a lack of saves at Steffen it's worth remembering that Roberts last game was Cardiff at home, he conceded 3 and never got a glove on any of them.

Roberts has played 5 times for us, he was solely at fault for the loss to Barnsley, and was shocking against Cardiff.

He had very little to do against Swansea or Sunderland either way.

He played well against Watford.

So that's 1 good game in 5.

He was only playing because Steffen was injured in the first place, and his final game was the one against Cardiff where he conceded 3 very preventable goals.
