Starmers biggest problem.

Thing is SmallTown & I'm going to apologise but have to say, you constantly argue & jump on any political thread regarding the tories & Brexit that I have this vision of you been a depressed person full stop, you never seem happy, continually arguing all the time & never see anything from someone else's point of view
I'm so glad that I'm in your group of uneducated, uninterested & stupid people, as a person I've achieved so much, as a family person & work wise, not to far from retirement, I also go out my way to help others as a volunteer, so I am interested in other people & care also
There are a few posters on here now who fit voters in a stereotype for make yourselves happy instead of live & let live & respecting people's choice
I think that's harsh on ST to be honest Erimus. What he says is largely correct. A huge swathe of people are seduced by Johnson's tub-thumping without realising neither he nor his policies have any substance whatsoever. In no way was that a criticism of you or anybody on this board in fairness.

BoroFur - ST didn't help himself by saying "There are too many stupid, uneducated and uninterested people who don't bother grasping what happening.
He constantly name calls anybody who doesn't have the same point of view or opinion as him
You have put your opinion across in a civil manner - there are a few on here who could learn a lesson from you ;)

Maybe so Borofur, but as I stated people have the choice to vote as the see fit, the old board resulted in name calling, which in the end got totally out of hand, why should someone who voted to, in their eyes, vote for a better future be constantly ridiculed on here
One poster recently posted, if you vote tory then you should keep quiet when talking about politics etc

This is a class messageboard & rightly covers every topic under the sun, not just football, holgate posted a good thread without the need to name call others, why cant that be the norm

Not in the slightest. I'm usually a positive and forward thinking person. The fact that this government are turning the country into s dumb backwater banana republic really annoys me. The fact so many of this country are too dumb or apathetic to do anything it IS depressing.

I loved this country and to see so many people happily letting it be ruined, and even sometimes defending those that are destroying it, is truly upsetting.

ST isn't incorrect in his assessment though, but it certainly doesn't apply across the board. There is evidence enough from posters on this and the old board that there are plenty of intelligent, reasonable and decent people who voted Leave.
My views on the vote haven't changed regarding whether it will be bad for the UK, but I do wonder how the views of some Leave voters have changed having seen how this government is approaching it and whether they think they've been duped one way or another.
Anyway, back onto Starmer Vs Johnson, I really hope that Starmer doesn't start down the identity politics avenue because I think there is more than enough evidence here, in the US and around the world that you need more than a cult of personality and spin to govern in an adult and effective manner. I quite took to Johnson when he was using his talent to entertain on HIGNFY or delivering a "wiff waff" moment, but he's not a leader in any way, shape or form.

Support for Labour seems to be diminishing rapidly because Starmer is perceived to be too centrist. The RLB incident hasn’t gone down well at all - it could be just a matter of time before the left of the party push for a leadership challenge

The left of the party has already had a leadership challenge and were annihilated. RLB could always try again I suppose but she won't even do as well as the last time.
Back Starmer or find another flag to rally round.

I'll just add this here after watching Jeremy Hunt on Channel 4 news. Couldn't stand the bloke when he was in government, but now he's not he seems to have far more reasonable and sensible views even if I don't entirely agree with a lot of them. Is this an indication that being in government requires you to sacrifice a load of principles and "play a part" and follow the party line? It has always happened to some extent, but is it far more prevalent now? If so then it's actually quite depressing that there may well be some talented people who could make real changes and that they are being hamstrung or sidelined by people like Cummings or special interest groups who are shaping policy from behind the scenes. I think Brexit was so big that it must have sacrificed a lot of principled Tories in order for it to be wrestled away from UKIP as a core policy. I'm thinking of the Ken Clarke's of this world.

Johnson has caused enough deaths through poor leadership, and for the last 10 years his partys voters helped underfund the NHS thats helped cause lots too.

Support for Labour isn't “diminishing rapidly” though.
I think sadly it is - have a look on Twitter, there are an awful lot of people seriously unhappy with the direction Labour are going under Starmer, and a lot have cancelled their membership because of it

Membership of labour is different to support for labour. You have to appeal to none typical labour voters or you're dead in the water. Bringing the party in from the left will help.

Labour up to around 40% in the latest opinion polls so that would suggest Starmer has attracted a lot of support in the last few months. I know activists are the lifeblood of a political party but they can be dogmatic and out of touch with the average swing voter.

HolgateCorner I think you're probably right about Labour gaining opinion poll support, while losing members.

However I do think there's potential for Labour to end up losing some of the affiliated unions. People forget how stuffed the party's finances were before Corbyn trebled the membership and brought a few extra on board.

Having said that, if Starmer keeps tacking to the right AND showing gains in opinion polls then I'm sure he'll encourage a lot more donations for big businesses and wealthy individuals. But when you reach that point then what really is the difference to having the tories in.

The dumbing down started decades ago, weren't you looking then?

Wherever I've lived, I've always used tactical voting and gone for the candidate most likely to keep the Tory out. That was always either Labour or Liberal Democrat, although I think I would even have voted SNP when I lived in Aberdeen. I hate having to do this, but that's the reality of this excuse for democracy.

I don’t think Starmer at this stage has a problem....it’s a long way off from an election. The best thing for labour would be if the tories outed Johnson... but they would be committing suicide at the same time.

Johnson as I have said before is a rockstar in the terms of politics. Everyone knows him, 90% of the country don’t think about politics until election time. He’s a vote winner for the tories. Everyone knows he is a Toff but not the typical Tory one Hague, IDS, Howard etc. Going back to that will lose them the election as they can’t sell it to the working man
