Starmer should tell the teachers to strike

The elections on May 6 are first opportunity to see if anyone buying
It's certainly a big opportunity for people to make their feelings known.
I'll be absolutely staggered if the Tory party had a 'successful' round of results.

KS IS a prat - simple
Calling for strikes is another ridiculous thing to say.
I'm not a Tory but wouldn't like to think KS was running the country.
Do you think he would do a worse job than the current guy in number 10?

The man is better in every way than Boris from morals to intent what is your rationale that he is 'a prat' and would be bad for the UK?

Would be interesting to see how they have put that together as they clearly have an agenda, but considering schools havent been at full capacity for most of last year, and when they were open cases were at minimal levels, their results are hardly surprising.

Fact is we shouldnt be expecting anyone to go to work in an unsafe environment without a vaccine, and considering its almost impossible to make a school anywhere near covid safe, teachers should be fully vaccinated before they are forced back to work

What about the police and the fire brigade aswell then? Also the military. In fact you would think that the military and NHS, police and fire brigade would be the first to be vaccinated alongside the most at risk.

Are you saying Public Health Scotland have an agenda?

Clearly they are at risk too, but not to the extent of being in a small room with 30 kids not wearing masks or understanding social distancing or proper hygiene. Not really many worse places you could be during a pandemic. Hardly fair to push teachers back in where they cant avoid the risk

Of course they are at the same risk, in fact you could say even more at risk. For example how does a police officer know the person they are arresting isn't positive when they are in clear close contact to them? Or the fireman rescuing a family from a burning building who have been isolating. Or military personnel sharing barracks and vehicles.

Very true, and they should all be vaccinated asap, probably in the same priority as the extremely vulnerable. However police/fire etc are an essential service so they dont really have an option other than to work, although it isnt ideal teachers could still teach remotely for a bit longer until they are fully vaccinated to take the risk away from themselves. Whatever your views on it, its just wrong to push anyone back to work when it clearly isnt safe.

Coincidentally after I'd posted a reply to your post I had an email off of my eldest daughters school with regard to the return of kids to schools. They are all looking forward to it, class bubbles will still be in place. Different start and finish times for each year group, different lunch times for each year group, mask use by all adults on school property at any time. Will obviously differ from school to school to school but if schools have put the work in to make them safe as can be then they should have the choice themselves to open.

The choice of one school is hardly representative though, and its likely made by the head who wont be within 2 meters of another person whilst at work, doubt the teachers who will be the ones at risk will be as happy. They can make it as safe as they like but the fact remains that being in a small room with 30 kids who wont be wearing a mask or distancing is a dangerous work environment without being vaccinated, and pushing people back into this is just wrong. They could vaccinate every teacher this week and the risk would be at least reduced by the time the schools open. But they wont, and they will instead slate the teachers/unions/Labour when the inevitable strike happens which prevents schools fully reopening.

It's not just as simple as continue to teach remotely its not anywhere near being taught in school. My daughter is 6 and she has 2x 40 mins lesson with her teacher a week. We don't have access to a printer so can't print any of her work off so we have to write it out by hand for her. Then that is emailed back and it's counted towards her overall mark for the year. Usually 3 sheets of A4 a day just isn't enough.

Where did I say it was representative?
Although come to think of it as most schools are now part of wider academy groups then I'd hazard a guess that our school isn't the only one with these thoughts and rules.

Do you have kids in school JM?

Oh and we both work full time from home. Its quite difficult when I have meetings during the day to have a 6 year old charging around. Unfortunately we live in a small cottage so there isn't that much room

Just think if de fefel hadn't cocked up the covid response then you wouldnt have that problem

I dont, but not sure if thats relevant. Im not saying they shouldnt go back, I just dont think its right that we are essentially forcing people back into an unsafe work environment when the problem could be sorted by offering a vaccine in the meantime. I would be on strike if my employer tried to put me in an unsafe environment so I really dont blame them when the inevitable happens on the first day they are due to reopen which will cause chaos

But we are repeatedly told that even though you've had the vaccine you just still follow the covid rules so what difference does it make? The over 60's and those with other risk factors will have been vaccinated by the 8th March. Forced how? At gun point? If a teacher or any other person from any other profession for that matter, doesn't feel comfortable going into work then they don't have to.

You take the vaccine to protect your own health, not so you don’t have to follow lockdown rules.

If you don’t turn up, unless it’s a registered strike you either won’t get paid or more likely be sacked, so essentially you are forced in unless you can afford not to work.

Call in sick. No local authority in its right mind is going to sack a teacher in this climate are they? Then full schools don't have to close, kids don't get punished by unions playing politics, those teachers who've been vaccinated because of age or medical reasons cam continue on as normal and other school staff who for whatever reason they deem applicable to themselves can stay at home either on furlough pay or sick pay.
The kids get to continue their school education and social education, everybody 'wins'.
