Starmer should tell the teachers to strike

I
OP you should change the thread title. Starmer's gone in a polar opposite direction.

"Keir Starmer opposes strike action by teachers and says they may have to work during holidays."

What a great leader of the Labour party he is - you know, the political organisation that's there to represent workers and the trade union movement. Happy and willing to throw workers Ts & Cs away like that. I wonder who he'll throw under a bus next.
To be fair, I think Starmer is right on this one. The back end of a pandemic, when everyone has been struggling isn't the time to strike. What if NHS workers had fancied striking in the middle of it?

I think Starmer rightly realises that if he was too vociferous at the moment, it could back fire. I'm sure he'll be more vocal in his criticism of the government when the intensity of the pandemic eases.

No - what you do is find a big car park and have a show of hands. Simple

Im doing good deals on surplus donkey jackets if anyone wants one
no problem with that, but that call comes from the 'teachers'- not starmer.

corduroy and tweed jackets with elbow patches is more a school teachers thing - Donkey Jackets are for industrial workers standing round a brazier - Thatcher and the tories murdered those jobs without finding adequate replacements, its one of the reasons why Teesside is still on the bones of its @rse.

Are people really suggesting the leader of the Labour Party calls a national teacher strike? Really?

It would be electoral suicide on an epic scale. The Tories wouldn't move an inch with their media lap dogs ripping Labour apart, a game where noone wins and children lose.

Children shouldn't be going back 3 weeks before breaking up for 2, it stupid and I believe teachers should have been vaccinated due to their contact with hundreds of children while unable to wear PPE. Successfully opening schools is critical to everything else and this could easily have been the narrative to justify their vaccination if the Tories wanted too.

The government are making these decisions and are wholly responsible for the result, yet rather than tackle them its used as a stick to beat Labour with.

The Tories laugh at us through their incompetence while Labour gets the blame. Bizarre.

Why is it stupid?
Staggered returns certainly but kids need to be back to school. Education is just as important as having Gregg's and Cooplands open.

Steady on Randy :)

Schools should open if SAGE say it is the right thing to do, same with Greggs. If that means we keep some of the economy closed a bit longer, then at least the decision was motivated by scientific endeavour and not political wants and needs.

The truth is, the government are under pressure from back benchers to do what the party want irrespective of what the scientific community is suggesting.

As for Starmer telling the teachers to go on strike.. I can't be bothered weighing in on that argument.

It's stupid because they are all being sent back at once with cases around 4 times higher than last time.

3 more weeks gives more time for preparation and for cases to fall, also a nice 2 week break for kids to prepare themselves to go back and mix with hundreds of others.

Another lockdown will do their education far more damage than waiting 3 more weeks.

Kids are sick of waiting.
Even those who weren't fans of school can't wait to get back. I agreed with you with the staggered returns and that'll probably come to pass anyways once the unions become involved again.

They can't even properly social distance in schools, my fiance was teaching in a classroom of 30 kids without masks, without wearing a mask herself and the closest desk to her was less than 1m away because there is no room to do it any differently.

It makes sense to wait 3 weeks doesn't it which gives you 5 weeks and by then you would hope that all or near enough over 50s are vaccinated. This government don't really do sense though.

If de fefel won't give her a vaccine she should not go back to work

Shes still at work, the school haven't let them work from home unless they go to the head teacher and explain their reasoning. They've had 2 cases among staff this week and that's with around 10 students in all week.

This is a false equivalence. NHS workers striking during a pandemic could never be a good outcome but the reason that teachers would be striking (if they were striking) would be purely for reasons of health and safety.

It's a stupid remark anyway isn't it? Nobody ever "fancies striking". It's a last resort.

My view would be it’s because Labour are not offering up an alternative vision - what is their manifesto - what would they do if they got in charge - I don’t think anybody knows, I don’t even think they know. All they seem capable of is attacking and criticising the current gvt at every turn but at some point they need tell us what they are about if they are to have any chance of getting into power.
Why would they have a manifesto when the next election is not for another 4 years?
